Q. Video Transcript:
(Jane is a student of nursing in the Felician College. She came for a counselling
session to me. The following is the interview with Jane):
Me: Hello, Jane how are you?
(Looking at her eye)
Jane: I am feeling very much anxious and afraid.
(Looking stressed and very much uncomfortable, moving every now and then)
Me: Why are you so much anxious?
Jane: I think I am lagging from my studies and my time management is not up to mark.
Me: Why do you think you are lagging?
Jane: I am not being able to cope up with the study modules and also could be able to
understand what professors are trying to teach us.
Me: I think this is your overthinking which affects your understanding skills. However,
please let me know why do you think your time management is not up to the mark?
Jane: I am not from the locality so I started working part time to sustain against my own
expenses. It was working accordingly my plans. I was coping properly with this process of
work and study in the first place. However, when the second semester began the study
pressure was rising with time and I felt like I am drowning.
(Still in discomfort, moving her hands and head)
Me: I see. So let me know one thing only one part time job putting pressure on you at this
rate?
Jane: No actually I am from a conventional Christian family so I have to attend the Church
every day and also work for the Church as my father is a senior minister in the Church. Other
than this the practical works of the class module along with the class as well. All these
aspects left me in a hectic condition. I am feeling mentally disturbed all the time and also
could be able to concentrate in anything.
(Still feeling anxious, however lessened from before)
Me: I feel sorry for you. However, tell me one thing what do you think from when you have
been feeling like this?
Jane: It’s been a while. I can point out the time frame of this feelings from at least 3 to 4
months and the feelings is getting higher and higher with time. I also feel like I am losing the
eagerness of study. I was very much aspirant about the nursing course and now I am feeling
like I cannot continue with this course and will fail. So I will be stuck with my career
planning.
(Looking sad)
Me: I thinking too much please be relaxed. I am here to help you do not panic on this
condition. You will be able to normally work on your studies and other things.
(Smiling to her trying to make her comfortable)

2EVALUATING THE ATTENDING SKILLS
Me: I think you need to relax and think about what is the primary priority of yours and plan
accordingly. However, lets place these aside tell me what relaxes you most? Also tell me
what do you do when you feel lost?
Jane: Actually I have a hobby or you can say knack of drawing. However, after enrolling for
the second semester I have not been able to properly draw anything. Actually now I can
remember I did not draw anything in these months. Which makes me feel bad. Other than this
I think I listen to music in the nights when I feel more depressed.
(Looking calm)
Me: How do you feel when you listen to music?
Jane: It comforts me and helps me in forgetting the stress.
Me: Okay now tell me more about the feelings you have when you are in the class?
Jane: It feels like I am lagging behind everyone in the class and sometimes could not be able
to focus on the lectures. I also feel like I am out of everything cannot be able to relate to
anything or understand anything as well.
(Again anxiety raised)
Me: Okay I understand your concern. Now tell me about any kind of achievement you have
achieved in this course?
Jane: Yes, I had a great grade in the first semester however, falling behind the course module
and cannot cope up with the study and also could be able to manage the time as I had
managed in the first semester.
(Glimpse of smile seen then faded)
Me: Now what I am saying just listen carefully. You are thinking about the time management
in a way which affects your critical thinking process and also affecting you studies. You are
more focused to the aspect of the time management and the issues you are facing and
forgetting the actual priority which is the study. Thus the study course is neglected and your
brain is working according to your anxiety about the issue. So you need to relax and channel
your thought process to the studies first.
(Jane listened carefully, directly watching my eyes)
Jane: Okay this is something I did not think of. I think this is the actual problem and it
affecting my studies and also giving me trouble in the process of understanding. However,
could you please help me in channelizing my thoughts and provide me the idea what can be
done to address this issue. I do not have any experience in this type of problems so I need
some help in this process.
(Looking hopeful)
Me: Okay let me tell you something that would be helpful for you. You need to take deep
breaths when you feel very much stressed. On the other hand you can start doing some
breathing exercises, yoga, stretching exercises. These will help you freshen up and also
leaving the stress behind. Fresh start in the morning helps in energizing for the whole day. On
this context it can be stated that you can be able to start thinking positively on every aspect of
life. Hence, I am trying to tell you that you should focus on the positive aspects of life rather
than the pressure of the study course and the financial issues you are facing now.
(Again listens carefully)

Jane: Okay you are saying that if I do these exercises everyday then it would be helpful in
elimination of all the stresses.
Me: Yes. However, this will take time. Other than this the positive thinking will also be
effective in this process. You should also spend time with your friends. Social isolation
would lead to more stress and depression. You should also be able to find out the factor of the
time management process that is a routine chart maintenance. In way you can be manage the
time of the daily works. On the other hand the routine chart should be detailed and also you
should set alarms accordingly to work properly on your studies and also the part time works
along with the Church works as well. You should also socially connected with others such as
parents, family members and friends that would help you in the stress reduction.
Jane: Okay as you said it will be helpful in the proper arrangement of all the works and the
chores I have to address every day right?
(Looking very much satisfied)
Me: Yes, it would do the trick. However, your focus should not shift from your studies and
also the proper help from your parents will give you the knowledge about the time
management process as they are experienced in this process and you are still inexperienced in
the professional world.
Jane: Thank you for your help I think I am now confident about this aspect. I think if I adhere
to these things you mentioned then I can be able to reduce the stress and also work on my
time management issues. However, I think the social connectivity would be tough for me as
there is very less time in comparison to my daily schedule.
(Looking concerned)
Me: No, do not think like that as the social isolation would affect the mental state and leads to
the depressed condition more and more. Hence, the conversations with the parents and also
the friends would be effective in terms of the reduction of the stress.
(I tried to convince her by moving my hands and emphasizing the conversation)
Jane: Okay I will try to follow your advices and also work on my connections as well. Other
than this I can be able to specifically take out some time so that I can understand the studies
and learn them properly. Thank you very much for your time and helping me in confidence
development.
(Looking very much satisfied and smiling properly)
Me: It’s alright. I am here to help you and please do not forget the relaxing exercises,
breathing exercises and yoga. These things will help you in proper refreshment and also
energy development.
Jane: Yes, I will not forget. Thank you very much.
Me: Welcome.

stresses her out severely. Her anxiety was in a higher level. Thus she came to take the advice
and also consult the issues with the counsellor. Jane is a Christian girl and need to attend the
Church every day and work for the Church, she also needs to work for part time as she is not
from the locality and need to collect money in order to spend in her daily needs. Thus she is
lagging in her study course and also getting very much anxious about the fact thus health and
the studies getting hampered. It can be stated that the mental health affects the daily life style
and also the factors of the physical health. Hence, it is required to find the proper solution for
her time management and also finding the aspects which would help her addressing all these
issues (Eikelenboom et al., 2015).
As a counsellor I was there to help Jane to find out the process which would help her
in properly adjusting with the classes and also with her works. On this context it can be stated
that my goal was to develop trust and the professional relationship with Jane so that I can be
able to find out her actual problems and direct her to the positive outcomes of her life. Thus I
was communicating with and finding out the negative mental condition of her and according
to the situation I was helping her to avoid the problems and also telling her what can be
changed and what should help her in this situations. Hence, it has been seen during the
interview process that in the first place she was very much tensed, anxious and sad. However,
along with time she was opening up and her expressions were changing accordingly (Moore
et al., 2018). As I was telling her what to do and what would help her she getting interested
and confident about the factors. Thus on this context it can be stated that the mental beliefs
can play a crucial role in the mental health. I helped her to avoid the negative thoughts and
also finding the likings of her also giving her advice for the time management concern for
her. So at first when she has arrived she was very much anxious and did not feel comfortable.
After the conversation proceeded and my words impacted over her thoughts and beliefs she
eventually got more comfortable and also get the idea what should be done to avoid the
issues. Hence, on this context it can be stated that the factor of the conversation helped her in
the process of getting her positivity back.
In this conversation the skills of communication played the crucial role and the effects
of the words changed situation for Jane. Thus it can be stated that the positive interaction that
is eye contact, smiling when talking, boldness in the word pitching are the skills of the verbal
communication which impacted on the mental state of the client. On the other hand the
movement of head, movement of hand, body posture are the aspects of the non-verbal
communication which impacted over Jane as well (Boissy et al., 2016). Hence, it can be
stated that the factor of the communication skills impacted the most. On the other hand the
proper questioning about the aspects of Jane’s thought process also helped in the knowledge
development about her issues. Thus the questing skills also helped in the process of the
conversation development. These were the skills important for a proper and positive
conversation and I am capable of using these skills properly. Hence, I have used these skills
intentionally in order to find the actual issue and the beliefs of Jane. I also used the directive
communication to help her in finding out the actual way to manage the time properly. Thus
she found confidence and her mental state changed as well. Thus it can also be stated that
conversation can impact over the mental state and change the beliefs of a person which would
help in the proper positivity development of a person (Pelletier et al., 2017).
The conversation process was flawless as I have used the proper communication skills
and also finding out the issues of Jane. On the other hand the ethical and cultural
considerations also maintained in the conversation so that no feelings of Jane would hurt.
Thus it can be stated that the conversation and the planning of the time management was
properly developed and helped her in finding the solution. On this context it can be stated that
the whole conversation process went well in a short period of time. However, the time

management process for Jane could be developed with more details. That would be helpful in
better addressing of the issues she is facing. However, the factor of her lesser knowledge and
experience should be considered thus the time management planning was developed in an
effective and not much details. Thus it can be stated that the conversation and the counselling
was good and helpful for the client here.
In order to evaluate the interview process it can be stated that the exploration of the
mental condition of the client can be done more effectively and that would be helpful in the
better assessment of the condition of the client. On the other hand the she can be provided
with more knowledge about the present world and it would be effective in more acute and
effective exploration of the mental state of the client and helping her in the proper assessment
of the time management planning. However, lack of time and experience of the client
prevented these detailed exploration process. On the other hand her hobbies and positive
practices should be incorporated in the time management planning as well. However, all
these would have impacted negatively on her mind. Thus these aspects were eliminated in
this process of the conversation and counselling (DeBenedectis et al., 2017).
Based on this interview and the discussion about the interview it can be state that it
would be helpful in the process of the experience development for the future practices. The
factor of the interview provided me with better assessment planning, communication skill
development and improvement, exploration skills, cultural competence development and
positive communication skills development along with the understanding of the client’s
mental state. Hence, it can be stated that these skills would be more effective in the future
practices of the counselling and also delivering a proper therapy to the clients. On this context
it can also be stated that the knowledge would help me in working with the similar kind of
clients as well different clients as well. On the hand the effects of the conversation would be
explored and the video should be reviewed several times in order to gather more knowledge
about this factor of the counselling and helping the clients in an effective way in future.
