ETHICAL DILEMMA
Introduction
The task that is performed in counseling had been the most professional work until now. This
particular job requires prime ethics along with the professional code of conducts or principle that
are to be followed. The process that is implemented in this particular task includes the
professional coursework as well as modules. This particular essay implies the professional
function along with the ethics that are being performed by the subject of the essay. Being a
professional and solo practitioner, she had to maintain equilibrium or a balance in the
professional and personal life (Di Mattia & Grant, 2016). It is being taught in the session of
counseling training that no one should ever mix up his or her personal and professional life. If a
person of this particular profession does so, then it is for sure that a particular person has to face
several problems. The problems are being referred to as a dilemma in this case. The person who
is considered to be the case of the study is a counselor and is practicing her course. During her
course, she had met a client who is having an attraction toward Mary. Mary happens to be named
the practitioner.
However, the main problem prevails here is that Mary is also having an attraction toward the
client. Being involved in the process of psychotherapy, she can never deal encounter such
situation. These are the situations that are considered to be most unprofessional for a counselor.
However, it is totally her choice to stick to the ethics along with principle and move forward with
her task that she had been asked for (Etherington, 2017). Or she could generate an equal response
to the client. It depends on Mary. The consecutive paragraphs would be denoting the
identification of the major problems along with the frameworks related to it to have a better
understanding.
Dilemma
When the word "dilemma" comes to mind, the first and the foremost word that comes to mind is
a problematic situation. In simple words, it is the situation that when a person is being asked to
choose between two different choices. The choices here depict the main part of the problems.
The choices put the person is such a situation that would affect the mental conditioning of that

person (Liou, 2018). This is because the person is being left with two choices and she or he has
to pick one. Both the choices might be quite close to the person. In this situation, the person does
not want to lose any of the condition. However, the person has to make an understanding of one
side and has to sacrifice the other one. It is in the nature of human to make out a certain choice
from two different as well as difficult choices (Martin, 2016). There is also an alternative
assumption that is also prevailed in the description or in the explanation of dilemma. The
alternate definition states that the choices being provided to the person could also be equally
undesirable. In this situation, the person is not in the mood to make the decision but is bound to
make one (core.ac.uk, 2019).
The previous paragraph stated the major points of dilemma. Now in this section, the points
would appropriately be stating to the case study that is being provided. According to the case
study Mary, who is a practitioner of the activities related to counseling is is a dilemma.
Therefore, the major question arouses is that why is she in a dilemma? What are the factors that
had led to this sort of situation? The answer to this sort of question is quite dilemmatic itself
(Malarbi, Muscara & Stargatt, 2016). There could be several justifications to this question but
could be concluded in a single answer. To be precise, the dilemmatic situation here is the
identification of what Mary actually wants. She is also left with two choices. One is her career,
and her practice and the other one is the client who is showing much interest in. The intention of
the client is not being identified but is clear to what he wants from her. The client said that he
took an appointment for the checkup of his mental conditions and from whatever he is going
through. The session of counseling lasted for about forty-five minutes (Nutter et al. 2018). Form
the thorough study of the case it had been identified that the session had been fragmented into
two parts. The first session was about thirty-five minutes while the second part was nearly about
ten minutes (Bhola & Raguram, 2016).
The first session of 35 minutes was professional by the way it should be. The first session
includes a brief of the client. In this scenario, the word "brief" represents the typical assertive
nature of the client along with all the questions that had been from the part of the client only. In
this particular session, the client had depicted his managerial position, his workplace and many
more. Not only the client had mentioned his place of work but also had mentioned about the
issue and the strain that he is having with his boss. Many could relate this particular factor to the
reason behind the appointment (Chatterjee & Saraswathy, 2016). This means people could give it
