The Sandwich generation is the generation which is taking care of their elders and kids at
the same time under the formation of a joint family.
2. What is the impact of the sandwich generation on Herbie, his daughter, and her
family?
In the words of the daughter of Herbie, “Our house was never quite”, the interaction of
the generations always brings in joy among the people. Her kids sometimes felt
neglected; however, they also started helping Herbie in the day to day activities. Herbie’s
son in law accepted his presence in the house and treated it as a responsibility.
3. What are the benefits of Herbie? What is the difficulty for his daughter, husband,
and children?
Herbie was getting the undivided attention of a family. Her daughter once said that "playing
with kids are far better than medicines." It was a tough life for Herbie's daughter to manage
all the ends, her work, house, kids and married life. Husband was also tired of the attention
that Herbie was seeking all the time.
4. What are other options available for Herbie and his family? What are the benefits of
the option they chose?
It was possible for them to shift Herbie in an institution where they take care of elderly
people. Professional caregivers under a well-organized setup can manage the process of
caregiving well. However, they can never be a replacement for the affection and the care that
an immediate family or a biological family can provide.

5. If you were Herbie's family what would you do and why?
I am completely agreed with the stance taken by Herbie’s daughter, when she said, my father
showed up when I was in need, now it is my turn to be there when he needs me. In terms of
sociology, I can say that it is my ethical duty. However, the emotions and servitude that you
feel for your parents and grandparents are beyond the words to comprehend and that will act
as my driving force if I will find myself at the place of Herbie’s daughter.
