IntroductionOrganisational Behavior is the approach to create an efficient business process by understandinghow people in an organisation should communicate with each other. Tesco is a multinationalcompany from UK and the third largest retailer in terms of gross revenue. Some of the employeesat TESCO including me have been invited to meet with a local Employer Advisory Forum whichis supposed to present a discussion topic on the organisational culture and motivation. Accordingto the forum, the organisation cultures can be categorized into four types according to theirnature, they are:The Clan Culture, the Adhocracy Culture, the Market Culture, and theHierarchy Culture. The forum also mentioned that according to their research, the organisationalculture, politics and power play very important role in motivating the employees and guidingthem how to co-operate with others according to the organisational behavior.LO1P1At TESCO, the employees are greatly valued for their talent and creativity. The organisationtakes pride in motivating employees to enhance their skill sets and perform better thanemployees working at the other organisations. However, for the better understanding of different types of organisational cultures, the forumprovided a brief description about the characteristics of each cultureaccording to Handy’sCulture Typologyas follows:The Power Culture:In an organisation which follows power culture, the most of the power is held by a few peoplebelonging to the top level of the hierarchy of the organisation. Hence the business activities ofthe organisation are controlled by a limited number of people with other employees just
following their orders. Because of this there is chance of turning the relationship between thehigher management and employees becoming toxic. This is a strong culture which believes in theresult of the actions taken by the employees, not how they did it.The Role Culture:This culture assigns roles to the employees based on their abilities. Hence this culture can beeasily controlled as the responsibility is distributed in a systematic way. The level ofresponsibility assigned and the power in a person’s hand depends on the position of that personin the hierarchy of the organisation. This culture helps organisations to avoid risks, but thedecision making process in this culture is extremely slow because of the involvement of manypeople in the process. The Task Culture:Task assigned to an employee is a very important thing as the performance of the organisationdepends on the successful completion of those tasks. In this culture teams are assigned to specifictasks of the organisation. Power within the team keeps shifting based on the expertise of thepeson in the team. However, as the teams are fully focused on the assigned task which needsmultiple types of skills, a mix of area of expertises in needed from the employees in the team toexecute the task efficiently. The Person Culture:This culture is focused on each individuals related to the organisation. In this culture theemployees might think themselves as superior to the others and gain over confidence based onthat. Hence there is no unity among the employees and the organisation works with peopleworking only for themselves.Except organisational culture, there are other aspects such as power and politics which heavilyinfluence the behaviour of the organisation and its employees. The forum has described the roleof power and politics in organisational behaviour as follows:Power and its influence on the organisation:
