25011414Trung Chanh TranTOU9170MIntroductionWith the rise of globalization, to some extent business and ventures are influencedvarious of external factors such as economic boom, social cultural and technologicaldevelopment. Changing in those elements can lead to following modifications in allindustries. Until recently, the world economy has been hugely impacted by the presence ofnovel coronavirus (COVID-19). With the current COVID-19 crisis it is clear that globaleconomic growth is not currently on the agenda. In particular, most tourism and hospitalitybusinesses are in survival mode. The focus therefore has shifted to evaluating how theindustry is responding to survive through this unprecedented crisis and start to plan theirrecovery once it looks like coming to an end. As a starting point in this process, thisconference paper is aimed to scrutinize how the tourism sector has been affected by thepandemic, how the customers have been adjusting their consumption behaviour in order toadapt to this circumstance and what alternative options could be invested in order to assist thedevelopment of tourism and hospitality sector. The paper is based on the analysis of a widerange of research reports and articles that have been published on the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors, a number of websites and reportsthat have been published by the authorities, press and media, and many surveys that havebeen conducted in order to gather reliable materials in terms of customer behaviour theory.ContextThe tourism and hospitality industry has no doubt become one of the fast-changingeconomies in the world. According to the British Hospitality Association report in 2015, theindustry has paid around £41 billion in tax and become the 8th largest tourism destination inthe world, also has contributed around 4% of the national GDP. In addition, the UK’shospitality market is one of contrasts, ranging from pubs, restaurants, leisure companies torenowned 5-star and luxury hotels., to major national budget chains. International anddomestic tourism creates a demand for hotels and similar serviced accommodationfoundations of all kinds, segmented from upper, medium to lower scales. The prosperousperformance of industry is reflected by the number of average hotel revenue per room issteadily reaching to £151 in 2019 [ CITATION Jen20 \l 1033 ].Page 3

Coronavirus is reported as a new infectious disease, which is first identified inDecember 2019 in Wuhan, capital of China’s Hubei province. Despite of its rapidlyspreading in the mainland China, it was first initially disregarded by most of the governmentauthorities and political leaders in other continents of the world. As a result, coronavirus hasbecome a pandemic outbreak and speedily traveled around the world through manycommercial flights, transportation and human-to-human interactions. The pandemic escalatedexponentially at the beginning of 2020, which might only be the tip of the iceberg due todelayed case reporting and deficiency of testing kits (Li et al., 2020). It is until April 2020that governments realize global travel restrictions and stay-at-home orders as the mainstrategy to tackle against the pandemic, especially under these circumstances when novaccine has been distributed yet. In order to flatten the curve, most countries has appliedvarious forms of interventions such as: lockdown, social-distancing, closure of universitiesand moving to virtual education, cancelling sports events, concerts, festivals and implyingbans on gatherings of people over certain numbers. Those actions are aimed at fighting the quick transmission of the virus, but there aresome consequences coming along. Both international and domestic economies are hugelyinfluenced by the travel restrictions and lockdown policies. Within hospitality and tourismindustry, the coronavirus affected directly all parts of the segment as hotel chains have beenclosed, along with restaurants and tourist attractions, causing a decline of around 30% ininternational tourist arrivals, which means $450 billion in losses [ CITATION UNW20 \l1033 ]. Moreover, the tourism industry is an umbrella industry networked with many othersectors in the economy including community operations, education, finance, transportation, retail and vice versa. , therefore, it is vital for government authorities and business owners torealize the importance of safeguarding and recovering the tourism industry, also assessinghow hotels and visitor accommodation businesses have been affected and responded so far.The next steps are evaluating what recovery might look like and the long-term impact oncustomer behaviour. It is a must to have practical steps to reduce negative impacts on themost affected sectors including corrective policies in the economic and business fields as wellas a fast and appropriate innovation to create new behaviour to survive after the coronaviruspandemic [ CITATION Sep20 \l 1033 ]. The innovation and skills must be considered asquickly as possible to produce the maximum benefits from the economic paralysis.Page 4
