3DISASTER MANAGEMENTTopic 1IntroductionHurricane Katrina is termed as one of the worst hurricanes of the last decade to have hitthe United States. The death toll of this devastating natural disaster was more than 1500 peoplewhich itself is a horrifying figure and represents the amount of ferocity it brought with it. Theflooding caused by the Hurricane consumed many lives as more than a million of families andpeople more than that number rendered homeless by the tenacity of the storm. The most affectedareas were New Orleans and Gulf Coast. Apart from the consumption of human lives a lot ofwildlife, pets and sea creatures died due to the intensity of both the hurricane and the flood. Theofficial figures estimates Katrina to be the costliest storm in the history of Modern USA as itconsumed a cost of close to $108 Billion in damages and loss of lives. The storm reached amaximum peak with wind speed touching close to 25 to 30 nautical miles per hour while at theeye of the storm wind speed was close to 75 nautical miles per hour. I was enjoying my holidays in America and I happened to reach New Orleans three daysbefore the storm. I have preplanned to stay at New Orleans for 6 days and would be enjoying thedifferent tourist places, cultures, cuisines and many more such related elements. However myplans went haywire just a day before the hurricane (Barzinpou & Esmaeili, 2014). I had no ideaabout the emergency situation and was marketing when I noticed that the Police along with thedifferent authorities of the town were warning the people of the impending danger and wereadvising them rather forcing them to completely stay inside the doors.
