Josie Alibrandi lives with her mother and grandmother, and she has never met her father. Her
father does not want to accept her as his daughter. She feels isolated for her illegitimacy and
history of her Italian family. She also does not likes her strict grandmother, Nonna and has a
bitter relationship with her mother, Christina. The friends of Josie, Sera, Lee and Anna could
relate to her as they were also not from affluent families (Clarke, 2016). A son of a wealthy
politician, John Barton was also her close friend. All her friends were helping her to overcome
all her problems.

Tomato Day is the visual representation of Josie accepting her culture as it is an annual festival
and cultural tradition of the Italians. The background music gave the audience an idea of what to
expect from this scene. The song was sung in Italian that added miss-en-scene of the Italian
culture. This scene was a single continuous shot till Josie arrives in the scene. When she
appeared before the cameras, the color returned to normal, and the editing started. It was shot
with a handheld camera, and the color was made to appear like an old home cinema. The
