The Civil War had an enormous impact on the entire American nation and can be noted
as one of the prime historic events. This dreadful and traumatic experience endured by any
generation of Americans did change the existing societal structure and its norms. It can be
estimated that above 620,000 soldiers lost their lives in the war, (Hummel). The conflict began
primarily because of the long-standing disagreement over the institution and practice of slavery,
which indeed saw an end in itself with the conclusion of the civil war. Reflecting upon the
instances of World War 1, it is regarded as the "war to end all wars," which occurred between
July 1914 and November 11, 1918 (Krueckeberg and Donald). The First World War had an
enormous impact on US politics, culture, and society. This essay will primarily focus on the
African American, the Anglo American and the Native American communities who were
invested in a long and stubborn fight to finally bring an end to the continued oppression and
domination from the western powers and finally bring an end to the oppressive practice of
slavery.
The Civil War has undoubtedly casted a profound impact on the entire history of wars
and battles. It was also the most traumatic experience endured by any generation of Americans.

Slavery was mainly recognized in the southern states of America particularly by the mid-19th
century, where slaves were primarily used as house servants, farm laborers and artisans. Chattel
slavery formed the backbone of the largely agrarian southern economy. People in the northern
part as well as in the south considered slavery to be completely immoral (Bertocchi, Graziella
and Arcangelo). They considered the federal government to lack the required power and strength
to bring in constructive changes in the society which would aid in putting an end to slavery
Southerners felt threatened by the pressure of northern politicians and
“abolitionists,” understanding the ineffectiveness of the federal government in taking any
positive action.
The African-Americans troop was seen to serve in the in the Civil War on
both the Union as well as on the Confederate side. In the Union army, over
179,000 African American men were employed in over 160 units, while some
serving in the Navy and in support positions (Verney). This number comprised
of both northern free African Americans and runaway slaves from the South
who enlisted themselves to fight. The outbreak of the Civil War forever changed the
future of the American nation and perhaps most notably the future of Americans held in
bondage. The heinous punishment meted to the slaves included whipping, shackling, beating,
mutilation, branding and/or imprisonment. Punishment was most often chosen as a response to
disobedience or just a way of infusing dominance over the weaker mass.
Discussing about the effect on Anglo-Indian community in the event of civil war, the
Trent Affair needs a significant mention where the US navy illegally captured two Confederate
diplomats from a British ship; the UK protested vigorously (O'Malley and John). However, the

population in US wanted to celebrate this capture but President Abraham Lincoln and his top
advisors did not want to risk war with Britain over this issue and ended the conflict by releasing
the diplomats.
Native Americans were one of the prominent troops to have served during the civil war.
The most significant communities were Delaware, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Seminole, Shawnee
and many others. (Thornton) and many others. The Native American communities were severly
affected by the consequences of the war, the Creeks and the Cherokees suffered a great loss
among varied other indigenous troops. The end of the civil war marked serious damage to live
and property. Over 35% of adult females were left as widows and a large percentage of children
became orphans (Drury, Cooper, and Dursun). The war not only marked enormous loss of life
but also huge damage to harvest and live stock. The individuals who could survive this
devastating war came to be known as homeless refugees. It can be considered that the American
policies towards the Native American troops were quite constructive aimed at bringing positive
developments in the nation. The Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 brought legal citizenship to
Native Americans to pay a tribute to their heroic service in the World War 1(Capozzola and
Christopher).
However, there were certain positive aspects that could be interpreted with the conclusion
of civil war. The three major amendments that were brought to the U.S. Constitution were all
ratified within five years of the end of the Civil War. The Thirteenth Amendment completely
abolished slavery in the remaining slave states along with the 14th and 15th amendments that
guaranteed voting rights to the minority groups (Nackoney et al.). Primarily the Southern
economy was largely dependent on agricultural while the Northern part was industry oriented.
