Introduction
Personally, I am working in a small industry specializing in the production of
sweets. In the company, half of the employees are in the collection and packing
section, 10 of them are machine operators, 30 employees work in the workshop
section where they machine bevel gears and shafts used by the machines and
around 30% work in the offices. More than 70% of the employees in the company
are factory floor workers. There have been various issues in the engineering
department as well as the collection and parking department where the aim of this
paper is to critique and explain the principles of good work layout, methods that
have to tap into, including how MUDAS are affected by their use, how
stress/depression lower productivity and performance models that support overload
can occur even in hardworking staff. This paper will be divided into subsections
according to the questions given by the tutor where each segment will address the
provided question. The article will initiate and develop accurate and appropriate
plans to make the start-up company better able to compete with established
multinationals.

Question 1: Part a) Critique and explain the principles of good layout that
must consistently be assessed and where applicable define the key
performance indicators you would expect to evaluate.
Organizations have set goals aimed at achieving correct objectives aimed at
fulfilling the needs of stakeholders. The current organization I am working in, as
earlier stated specializes in the production of sweets, but it is apparent that there
are key areas that require a complete overhaul of the production process. Leaders
have to realize that set goals and objectives by an organization require tops
leaders, also considered as white-collar employees to communicate with blue-collar
employees. In any work situation, leaders have to understand that factory-level
employees are at work just for the pay, thus it is crucial to measure the progress of
a company using key performance indicators (KPI). Individual can use KPI index to
set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives
that are in accord with business goals and clients’ goals.
By using KPI indicators, individuals can determine specific, measurable,
achievable, relevant and time bound (SMART) goals consistent with business and
customer goals.
In the current organization working in, that specializes in the production of sweets,
though a start-up, focusing on a certain issue is crucial based on the information
below;

The above information shows that the demand for sweets will keep on increasing,
thus as an industrial engineer, it is crucial to design an efficient process that uses
less time, resources, raw materials and energy while still conforming to safety
regulations and standards. Nonetheless, it is also crucial to realize that a
manufacturing layout should be designed in a way that reduces operations costs by
approximately 50% (Wanniarachchi, et al., 2016). A good manufacturing layout
should be well designed to produce high-quality products while still reducing waste
as evident in the figure below.
In order to establish KPI based on the existing production process, it must be
considered from the following aspects: the feasibility of the production target, the
timeliness of the production cycle, and the concreteness and assessability of people
or things (SMART). SMART KPI employed in the company should focus on distance
travelled, movement of goods, energy efficiency, the overall efficiency of
equipment, and waste control (Wanniarachchi, et al., 2016). Workers in the
production department that including machine operators and packaging personnel
rely on machine maintenance people in order to maximize production. Machine
maintenance people on the other hand rely on workshop technicians who machine
different types of spare parts including bevel gears and shafts. As such, it is a
continual process where a layout of the production process needs to be employed in
order to reduce downtime in the entire process.
