Reason for less effectiveness of the officers
Field notes can be defined as the methods of data collection by using different
technologies such as photos, videos and audios. Field notes are considered as the data collected
by the officers during their observation of the crime scene (Brandl, 2017). In the current times
there has been gradual increase in the criminal justice trends of taking notes in a tablet or any
equivalent technology. This is considered as making the investigators less effective or even less
interested to write reports and notes that would be good quality (Becker & Dutelle, 2018). This is
mostly because by use of technology officers do not use their minds to write the notes and as
such often miss out on important information.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Voice Activated Notes among the Officers
The officers or investigators are observed as taking voice activated notes or other notes
on tablet devices. There have been both advantages and disadvantages to this methods of note
keeping. The first advantage is that by taking notes and logs the crime scene activities are
recorded permanently (Bonelli & Ragazzi, 2014). The second advantage is that they provide the
investigators with continuity of the record they maintain about the investigation. Taking voice
activated notes or taking notes in a tablet device often saves a lot of time.
Although taking voice activated notes is considered as advantageous to the investigators,
there are certain disadvantages to this practice as well. The first con to this practice is that there
is a high risk of missing out information (Birzer & Roberson, 2018). The second disadvantage is
that the task of taking voice activated notes or notes in tablets as well as observing the crime
scene is a difficult task.
