Executive Summary:
The report has been divided into three parts in introduction, discussion and the
conclusion parts and it will be focused on smooth business communication. In the
introduction part, it will discuss about the main topic of the assignment, which is focused on
business communication related to a case study of the Bank of Nova Scotia and the impact of
organizational hierarchy in that organization. The essential parts will be discussed briefly in
the discussion part, where definition of business communication along with the referred case
study will be introduced appropriately. The effective tools of maintaining business
communication will be explained at the last of the discussion part. The conclusion part will
summarise the whole aspects and the desired topics, which will also refer some
recommendations for the betterment of the organisation.

Introduction:
The report is organised and commenced on the impact of organisational hierarchy on
smooth business communication the bank of Nova Scotia. All the business venture is
coordinated and improved through business communication. It is referred to as the process of
distributing all kinds of information and documents with all those people that are linked
within the company and even outside the company (Bovée et al.). Management, along with
their employees, works together in order to meet the financial as well as organisational goals
by utilising effective communication (Kaul). The primary purpose of every business
organisation is to improve their skills, activities and reduce all the mistakes so that they can
establish a better organisation for all the employees and the organisation. It is quite
significant to improve communicative skills in order to flourish one’s business by producing
fierce competition (Ainsworth). Business communication is highly essential for all the
employees, along with the higher authorities so that they can function all the operations
appropriately (Kankaanranta and Leena). Leadership along with business communication are
the essential elements in any organisation, and it will lead the employees and the higher
authorities to organise a successful system (Mayfield and Milton). Therefore, certain critical
factors are responsible for constructing an organisation and especially rankings, which is
established as per the company’s power and significance (Allen et al.). It is clearly known as
the power structure, which is imposed on the understanding of the ranking and the most
significant one (Chelmis and Viktor). The impact of organisational hierarchy standards is
required so that the company engage their customers towards their business by generating a
better ranking (Friesen et al.).
The following case study is upon the Bank of Nova Scotia in Canada is the highly
influential chartered bank that has been providing extensive operations all over Latin

been engaged with personal banking, wealth management, and commercial banking sector. It
also manages the stock exchange market in New York and has crossed a handsome sum
amount of revenue $28.8 billion and earned a profit ranging for about $9.1 billion. They have
been serving twenty-five million customers all across the whole world from the year 1832
(Frost). The primary objective is to present the case study so that the organisational hierarchy
can be established and can be justified under the central subject of business communication
(Beyhaghi, Chris and Gordon). It will provide a piece of appropriate evidence and
information towards the desired subject by attaching compelling articles to highlight the
crucial factors (Barnes et al.).

1. What is Business communication?
Business communication is defined as the sharing as well as exchanging of the
desired information and essential documents so that the organisation can promote their
individual objectives, long-term goals, short-term goals, certain activities and so on. All the
information, materials and events are linked with the organisation, and they help in gaining
growth in the organisational structure, and it will help in improving their individual situation
in the upcoming years (Bovée et al.). Therefore, business communication will incorporate
certain aspects such as marketing factors, advertising, corporate communication, customer
relations, community engagement, customer behaviour, activity management, and so on
(Kaul). Certain kinds of advantages are linked with business communication such as
understanding deliverables, quality work among employees, actively working on errors and
rectifying the mistakes. Employees need to concentrate on their respective jobs and they need
to deliver their active role-play (Ainsworth).
The main functions of effective business communication are related in providing
information, persuasion and motivating the customers. Workers should organise their work
by generating effective communication so that they can obtain brilliant work performance
(Kankaanranta and Leena). Thus, it serves as an adequate tool to run one’s business and
benefit in increasing the growth of the business venture. Certain kinds of improvement will
be recognised among the employees and the staff members when they will succeed in
developing one’s morale along with their efficiency.
2. Impact of organisational hierarchy and communication:
In the business world business, there are certain levels of management in every
organisation, where they earn ranking from lowest to highest (Allen et al.). Employees who

are working at a higher level, need to control, organise and manage certain aspects that will
fetch them immense profit and significant growth in the upcoming years (Chelmis and
Viktor). Therefore, the higher authority has more control over managing the systems and
functions and those who work under the higher authority. They possess more powers over the
processes of decision-making and will allow them to make some significant decisions
regarding their respective organisation (Friesen et al.).
In short, hierarchy and communication are connected with each other, and it has been
associated with the process of exchanging data as well as influencing the members of the
organisation as there is an essential involvement in between one employee along with another
employee (Crane, Nobuko and Ken'ichi). Managers are connected with the organisation and
they need to perform every function together. Both are attached to the same string so they
need to handle all the aspects and tasks together (Jacobsson and Timothy). Therefore, there
are three main heads of any organisation and they are boss, managers along with the
employees.
The hierarchical structure of an organisational structure is based on significant factors
including, function, geography, and product. Firstly, function is focused on the workers that
are teamed up in order to deliver the same functions such as organising charts related to
finance, technical team, and HR department along with admin groups. Secondly, the
geographical aspect is focused on the workers, who are teamed up in the same region and
need to deliver the same amount of work. Suppose, the employees in the United States of
America can be gathered in the same state. Thirdly, product, the organisation has been
producing several numbers of products and have been offering various range of goods and
services, then those employees will work together for the same product or same project.

3. History of the Bank of Nova Scotia:
The Bank of Nova Scotia is the third leading and largest multinational bank in Canada
by incorporating its deposits and market capitalisation (Frost). The bank was founded in the
year 1832 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and was shifted to Toronto and Ontario in the year 1900. It
has been serving customers for more than twenty-five million all across the world and offers
a diverse range of goods and services, which includes wealth management, investment
banking, personal, corporate, and commercial banking (Scotiabank.com). There are for about
eighty-eight thousand employees, who have been attached to this bank for several years. The
bank consists of $998 billion as per the report of October 2018 and has been associated with
trade on the Toronto as well as New York Exchanges (Beyhaghi, Chris and Gordon).
Scotiabank has successfully taken the tag of “Canada’s Most International Bank” as it has
been associated with Latin America, the Caribbean, along with the parts of Europe and Asia.
ScotiaMocatta is the subsidiary and remained the member of the London Bullion Market
Association. It was one of the five leading banks that participated in the gold fixing in
London and finally, it was dissolved in the year 2019 (Scotiabank.com).
4. Consumer’s satisfaction, sustainable environment and the workers:
Customer satisfaction is the ultimate goal of Nova Scotia, and they are highly
committed so that they can provide the best experiences to their respective customers along
with their essential clients. They will acquire all the crucial details from the customers and
they can provide assurance for taking care of their circumstances (Scotiabank.com). They
always keep their details and information entirely secure so that they highly recommend
appropriate sales practices in their banking industry. They always try to resolve all the critical
issues and customer complaints as fast as possible and they try to maintain extreme privacy
so that they do not lose any of their customers (Scotiabank.com). The primary objective of
the organization is to conduct fair along with timely solution as they put their customers first.

brokerage environment. Bank of Nova Scotia allows their customers to send electronic
messages which will consists of targeted financial news, data along with goods and services

satisfaction to their customers.
The vision of Nova Scotia is to promote the cleanest as well as sustainable economies
in this year 2020. Sustainable procurement is an effective method through which the
organization have to consider environmental, societal along with the economic value of
products and services that are being purchased (Scotiabank.com). In this way, it will provide
benefits to the communities along with the local economy so that they can achieve proper
value for respective investments. The desired results in the purchase of the goods and
services will ensure them a better life and they will be able to sustain their resources for the
future generation as well.
Scotiabank has been serving their customers for so many years by connecting with
numerous families along with several communities. Therefore to achieve success by
distributing goods and services, pieces of advice, and capital markets, the organization has
been working on certain aspects such as providing a positive work environment for the
workers. The Government of Nova Scotia has always assured their customers an active and
healthy work experience for their respective employees (Scotiabank.com). They have also
taken measure in order to gain feedback from the employees, so that if they are in some kind
of trouble, then they can take strict action against the problems or regarding any employee. In
the year 2004, a survey was conducted from the organization in order to gather feedback from
the employees about their individual work environment along with their employment
experience. They have also managed to conduct regular surveys so that they can get a chance
to share their details and other information confidently (Scotiabank.com). Therefore, after

5. Significance of smooth business communication
It is quite essential to improve the communication skills among the employees and
with the managers as they belong to the higher authority and some critical decisions can only
be taken with the consent of both the faculties (Lennie and Jo Tacchi). Management along
with their employees will indulge in the effective business communication so that they can
the basic organizational goals by applying some improvements and developments in their
organization (Da HiLLs). The most highlighted aspect of providing effective communication
is to rectify the errors as well as reducing the mistakes that may come in between success and
proper practices. The essential part of effective business communication lies in presenting
innovative ideas and thoughts to any project (Deimen and Dezsö). The primary purpose of
every effective communication is run the business smoothly and to adapt new strategies.
There are few methods due to which, a smooth business transaction can be observed
and balanced in the organization such as:
Meetings should be organized by the higher authorities along with the other
employees so that they can understand the crucial aspects that the organization has been
facing and needed some urgent changes. Conference calls are the second most essential
aspects that helps to dissolve certain issues that might never get dissolved if they are not
attended. Therefore, managers and higher authorities may need to take conference calls and
need to keep in contact with the employees (Crane, Nobuko and Ken'ichi). Project
discussions are quite significant as they will engage team members in different set of projects

department, customers care service, and occupying with different set of innovations. Business
proposals are the highest level of coordinating with different levels of business projects with

company so that they can immense profits by rectifying their errors and to satisfy the
customers by providing quality products and services.

Therefore, every organization is structured according to their staff members and other
employees who are equally responsible for the growth of the organization and may affect the
organisation if they do not communicate effectively. Effective communication will provide a

their policies, strategies and marketing policies that will help them to gain profits and will
remove the weaknesses. The bank of Nova Scotia is always focused on serving the customers
effectively and helping them in every manner. The best possible ways to establish the
organisation effectively, is to communicate with the customers and clients so that they can
improve their ideas and thoughts and can manage the activities accordingly.
