INTRODUCTION
Stormwater is a form of rainwater that runs off saturated or impervious surfaces in the urban
environment such as green spaces, pavements, roads, and roofs. The issues of pollution in
stormwater in Adelaide are a major factor to be considered to ensure the sustainability of the
Adelaide urban area. This paper seeks to assess the issues of stormwater in Adelaide, the effects
of stormwater pollutants, steps taken by the government to control the issue, and compared
Adelaide with other cities.
STORMWATER ISSUES IN ADELAIDE
Suburban and urban areas generate more stormwater runoff because of hard and paved surfaces.
According to the Environmental Protection Authority of Adelaide, large quantities of discolored
water have been flowing down the system carrying contaminants and pollutants washed off the
soil beds and streets of Adelaide (Smith and Fairweather, 2016). Some of the major stormwater
issues experienced in Adelaide include:
Impact on Drainage systems
The major pollutant of stormwater is sediments which come from disturbed soil and then washed
by the stormwater into the waterways. These sediments block the drainage and water systems
within the city resulting in a shortage of water supply and busting of drainage systems. During
the periods of heavy rainfall in Adelaide, some wastewater systems are designed to discharge
excess untreated sewage and overflow directly to Saint Vincent Gulf (Beck and Birch, 2014).
Pollution of Water Bodies
The major issue caused by stormwater is the pollutants produced by trash, animal waste,
construction works, corroded surfaces, and oil discharge from vehicles. Water pollution from
stormwater is believed to be the second most prevalent source of water impairment in the
