A visit to the Magistrates Court of Australia
The children’s court of Western Australia is a special court that hears cases involving
young people and children (Salveron et al. 2015). The court has the jurisdiction to hear cases
relating to diversity of incidences. For instance, the court has the jurisdiction to hear cases
relating to the care and protection of children and young individuals aged bellow 18 years. Also,
the court hears criminal offending that involves people who are aged below 18 years at the time
of occurrence of the crime. The court handles traffic cases in which the defendant is not older
enough to hold either a driving permit or driver’s license. Furthermore, the court hears cases
relating to breaches of parole and the eligibility of young individuals and children for release on
parole. Therefore, the primary purpose of the children court of Western Australia is to promote
the realization of children and young interests within court proceedings (Cunneen, Goldson, &
Russell, 2016). However, the court only deals with children. In cases whereby an adult is charged
with a crime against a child, the jurisdiction shall be heard in a different court.
