Abstract— In this project OUSB is used to control a stepper motor which is actuated to a syringe pump tomeasure the flow of microfluidics system. The flow is controlled using a flow sensor and OUSB by takingoutput from the flow sensor for constant flow of liquid. Open USB has an advantage to use for any projectwhich is related to embedded systems, by taking this an advantage in this project OUSB is used which hasAtmega 32 as microcontroller which is used to control the speed of the stepper motor to control the flow ratein syringe pump. A flow sensor is then actuated at the other end of the project to measure the flow from thesyringe pump and the output is given to the microcontroller to control the stepper motor speed. Based on thisidea this project can be used in microbiology labs or when this is implemented in large scale to pump water todifferent places at constant flow rate. I.INTRODUCTIONOpen USB is a project designed at RMIT University by Dr P J Redcliffe for learning real skills in embeddedprograming with hardware interfacing by using a versatile microprocessor Atmega32. This OUSB can be usedin any operating system like Windows and Linux. Both operating systems has different commend line interfaceswhich allows direct access to Atmega32 by some commands which are predefined [1]. OUSB can handlecommands from single line to multiple lines and can be dumped in to the Atmega32. Based on this technologyour project is designed by implementing some more devises like stepper motor and pressure sensor. In thisproject a stepper motor is used to control the pressure in the pump by taking the input from the predefinedprogram which is dumped in the microprocessor. This project can be done by using Atmegs32 because microprocessor has many inbuilt peripherals likeuniversal asynchronous and synchronous transmitter and receiver for serial communications (USART) [2]. Themain aim or scope of this project is to implement OUSB to measure the pressure from the pump which will beused in the microbiology labs by using a pressure sensor and the pressure will be controlled by using a bipolarstepper motor. The figure below shows the basic view of the OUSB which is used in this project. The main heart of this project is open USB OR OUSB which is an embed device which is designed by theprofessor at RMIT university whose name is Dr P J Redcliffe for learning and teaching in embedded systems. This OUSB can be used both in windows and Linux environment with both has different scripting style andprogramming style on the other side both has same type of commands for the basic operation. As of my researchon the websites and Google search there is not much related projects and related information regarding to OUSB[2]. The only website which gives the detailed information about OUSB is Dr P J Redcliffe website which isbasically designed for the OUSB. Coming to the other details of the project this is related to embed system family as it contains both hardwareand software. Why this project is related to embed system is based on the definition of embedded systems saysdedicated computer systems with real time constrains with larger electrical or mechanical systems and oftenincludes mechanical and hardware parts [3]. About 98% of the embedded systems come with eithermicrocontrollers or microprocessors or both of them. On the other hand, coming to this project it includes amicroprocessor which is Atmega32 and has most of the electrical and electronic components. Going back why Dr P J Redcliffe has created OUSB? In the days of windows 98 and DOS all the inputs andoutputs can be easily accessible by the commands. As the days passes new OS has being launched like windowsvista and windows8. In new type of OS, it is hard to access to I/O ports are being blocked and alsocommunication methods have been changed from serial communication too parallel and to communicate withthe above methods most of the laptops these ports are not available. The only universal port is USB, after tryingdifferent methods professor was not happy with the results he got or the boards may be expansive. This all theabove features lead to create an OUSB with some features like driving the motor and programme your own codefor the microprocessor [2].II.BASIC CONCEPTThe main intension to design the project comes from professor Dr Francisco Tovar lopez which is designed tomeasure the constant flow rate using flow sensor from micro pumps using OUSB and stepper motor. As wellafter doing all the research on OUSB and its implementation there was not much projects and decided toimplement OUSB in this project. The basic block diagram of this project is shown:
