1PATIENT EXPERIENCE
Activity 1:
When a child experience illness, many behavioural and emotional response is seen by
both the child and their family caregivers. The presence of illness impairs achievement of several
developmental milestones for children because of absence from school and little opportunities
for psychosocial development. Feelings of alienation also has impact on development of
children. Hence, day to day life experience such as hospital admissions, staying away from
family and being isolated from peer groups several limits developmental experiences for children
(Fraser & Rosina, 2017). The above information is very useful for me as it will help me to
effectively deal with small children while providing nursing care. I will be able to interpret the
cause behind certain behaviour of ill children by utilizing the concepts of Erikson’s theory of
concept development. The significance of this theory is that it defines the impact of various
social factors at different stage of development for children (Knight, 2017).. Hence, I can make
appropriate judgement regarding the response to pain and disability for children.
I feel having understanding regarding psychosocial developmental stage of children is
critical in pediatric care as this will help me to provide appropriate care even when the child’s
parent is absent in the clinical setting. I can use problem-solving technique according to the stage
of development of children and identify the kind of conflicts that goes in their mind at different
stage of development (Cook et al., 2017). Hence, by utilizing the knowledge regarding the
developmental impact of traumatic experience in hospital, I will be able to provide age
appropriate care and engage the child in play that relieved their pain and discomfort level due to
illness.

From the review of Jame’s and
Libby’s experience related to
care in hospital, it can be said
that overall they had good
experience of care. The hospital
staff’s were interacting with
James and Libby well. For
example, while providing any
nursing care related activities,
they explained about the
treatment and they also took
measures to ensure that the
patient did not felt disrupted all
the time. For example, when
Jame had to be aroused from
sleep for taking his medication,
they explained to him the
reason for waking up. In
addition, to prevent discomfort
I am amused by the fact that
the nurse took care not to
switch the lights on while
providing night medications to
James. This highlights how the
carers of Noah were concerned
about providing positive care
experience to the child and
ensuring that the child does
not get irritated. In addition,
the fact that the nurses
considered giving appropriate
play items to the child is
commendable as I feel the
nurse were aware that children
of certain age need different
play items for comfort. I have
learnt a lot from experience of
Libby and his son and

important because the
