The PICOT intervention question for the study is stated as: “In school-aged children
diagnosed with ADHD, what is the effect of using pharmacological therapies for increasing
attentiveness and decreasing hyperactivity as opposed to using non-pharmacological therapies
within a six-month time frame?” The ensuing sections of the chapter present an analysis of the

Article 1: Barragán, Breuer amd Döpfner (2017)

Results: Non-pharmacological treatments for ADHD are highly preferred to

intervention initiative dubbed Pay Attention!, aimed at training “sustained, selective, alternating,
and divided attention among school going children” (Tamm et al., 2013).
Research approach: The study implemented a randomized clinical trial approach to

A longitudinal descriptive research design will be adopted for the identified quantitative
approach. According to Bryman (2017), descriptive research designs proceed with the aim of
explaining the prevailing state of a phenomenon. The fact that the proposed study aims at
analyzing the effect of using pharmacological therapies for increasing attentiveness and
decreasing hyperactivity as opposed to using non-pharmacological therapies within a six-month
time frame reveals the efficacy of the chosen design as the researcher is only needed to make use
of data that is observational in its upbringing.
Rationale of the descriptive research design
Descriptive research designs that are longitudinal in nature proceed with the aim of
studying a given population within a specified period of time (Chi-Pei and Chang, 2017). The
proposed study proceeds with the aim of analyzing the effect of using pharmacological therapies

Advantage of descriptive designs
One of the greatest advantages of descriptive research designs emanate from their
positions as precursors to future analyses and investigations (O’Rouke, Duggleby and Fraser,
2015, Polit and Beck, 2016). According to Noble and Smith (2015), descriptive research designs
are effective in fostering the identification of variables with the ability of being tested. For
instance, the fact that the current study underscores the effect of using pharmacological therapies
for increasing attentiveness and decreasing hyperactivity as opposed to using non-

pharmacological therapies within a timeframe of six months may act as a helpful precursor to the
identification of other variables that may be of great essence in impacting he adversity of ADHD

Disadvantage
The methods used in descriptive research designs give the scholar an allowance of
instilling bias in multiple ways (Norris, Plonsky, Ross and Schoonen, 2015). For instance,
Hussein (2015) and Park and Park (2016) explain that the words adopted in the questionnaires
used in the processes of collecting data could suffer the vulnerabilities of bias on the side of the
scholar. On the other hand, there are tendencies that the scholar may make subjective decisions
concerning the kind of data to be recorded as well as the levels of emphasis on a certain line of
findings (Claydon, 2015).
Sampling
Description of the target population
300 participants of age 6-17 years will be considered for this study. The research will
consider ADHD children referred to the mental health facilities located in Texas within a period
of three years. The children adopted will then be taken through multiple experiments in a period
of 6 months. The researcher will seek consent and approval from the children’s parents,
administrators of the educational institutions they attend and guardians. Further clinical
assessments will be conducted by a qualified psychiatrist to reveal their ADHD statuses.
Inclusion criteria

The subjects will be adopted for the research if they: (1) reveal the symptoms of ADHD;
(2) aged between 6 and 15 years; and (3) reveal a cognitive function exceeding an IQ of 70.
Exclusion criteria
Children will be excluded from the study if: (1) they are involved in another research or
intervention group; and (2) revealed the symptoms of a cardiovascular and/or neurological
condition.
Advantage of the sampling procedure
One of the greatest advantages of the sampling procedure emanates from its ability to
adopt participants based on ethics. Participants were only included with the consent of their
guardians and parents.
Disadvantages
The sampling procedure adopts small sample size (n= 300). Such a position limits its
ability to make generalizations for the entire population of school going children with ADHD.
Protection of participants’ rights
The study will ensure that the legal freedoms of the subjects are strictly adhered to. For
instance, the subjects will be included in the study after consent is sought from their parents and
guardians (Hartas, 2015). On the other hand, only labels will be used to foster anonymity and
privacy.
Proposed Implementation with a Change Model
Description of PDSA Model
The Plan-Do-Study-Act framework is an initiative of change aimed at fostering the
acceleration of quality advancements in healthcare settings based on iterative and straight

forward techniques (Qunhua, Zhou, Jie, Liu and Yan, 2016). According to Maraiki, Farooq and
Ahmed (2016), the model seeks to establish the changes that need to be implemented, how to

advancements.
The PDSA model is highly applicable in the processes of implementing the suggested
evidence based topic of study. The proposed study proceeds with the aim of analyzing the effect
of using pharmacological therapies for increasing attentiveness and decreasing hyperactivity as
opposed to using non-pharmacological therapies within a timeframe of six months. Therefore,
the PDSA model will act as a crucial blueprint of informing the researcher on the aspects of the
analysis that need to be accomplished, how to assess the changes attained within the period of
investigation and the alterations to be instilled to ensure that the desired non-pharmacological
approaches reveal their effectiveness.
Application of PDSA
Plan
In the “plan” stage, I will come up with the most effective strategies of undertaking the
proposed study. For instance, I will research on the probable fiscal resources needed for the
study and the availability of the stated resources.
Do
In the “do” stage, I will implement the plan adopted in the initial stage. In this case, I will
move to identify the variables and, undertake the stated experiments and analyses.
Study

The study stage will involve proper scrutiny of the results obtained. For instance I will
review the experimental results obtained. Further, I will make comparisons between the results
obtained and those stated in literature.

assessment reveals some loopholes, I will work towards adoption of changes.
Overcoming barriers to the effective use of EBP
I identified the large volume of literature as an impediment to effective
implementation of EBP in this study. To tackle his problem, I will seek guidance from lecturers
within the university. Further, I will seek the assistance of institutional stakeholders rated as
experts in EBP.
To foster an environment that supports EBP, I will work towards building the
belief that the application of evidence based practices play a significant role in improving care.
On the other hand I will seek for administrative support from key EPB strategists.
