AI Summary
The project aims to implement Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) technology for monitoring air pollution. The SWOT analysis of the WSN technique reveals that its strengths include low-cost installation, automatic data collection and processing, and the ability to analyze data in real-time. Weaknesses include high power consumption and limited alarm solutions. Opportunities include the potential for real-time data analysis with precautionary features and designing a low-cost solution. Threats include the risk of unawareness about air pollutants if WSN technology is not widely adopted. Overall, WSN technology has the potential to overcome the weaknesses and threats faced by current equipment.

Chapter 1: Introduction
Wireless Sensor Network is formed when many of the self-powered small sensing nodes are
collected and they gather information from the field in which they are deployed. They then
communicate this information in the wireless way and hand over the processed data to the base
station. The use of WSN technology is increasing in this fast changing world with a purpose to
establish a bridge between the real and the virtual worlds (Aparicio, 2013). It has provided great
support to the operation management of an organization. WSN technology has been of great use
of the construction industries of United Kingdom. In the manufacturing and construction
companies, the wireless sensor networks are used for monitoring and recording the conditions of
the different locations and passing the data collected to a main location with the help of a
network. The parameters which WSN technology monitors include the temperature, direction of
the wind, humidity, pressure, speed, voltage in the power line, level of pollutants, intensity of
sound, vital body functions, illumination intensity and intensity of vibration.
In this report, the current methods that are used for determining the speed and direction of wind,
level of humidity, pressure, voltage, pollutants, sound intensity etc. in the construction industry
will be evaluated in relation to the wireless sensor network. The WSN gives every organization a
technology which helps in monitoring the environment in which it is operating and analyzing the
environment and various aspects of the environment so as to execute the activities of the
construction industry in a better manner (Haule, 2014). The WSN technology that is proposed in
this report for the companies to adopt, will justify the highlights of it and prove that is more
reliable, inexpensive and simple to use than the other solutions that the companies adopt.

This tool is used to study the effects of the air moving past the solid objects. This tool helps in
measuring the aerodynamic forces, the distribution of the pressure and other characteristics of the
aerodynamics (Hinds, 2012). These are specifically used by the construction industries when
they have to determine the force of such winds before building the codes that specifies the
required strength of such buildings.
b. Diffusion Tubes
These tubes have a cap which is coated with triethanolamine (TEA), which is a chemical that
helps in absorption of the nitrogen dioxide. When the gases or air pass over it, the change in the
chemical happens and tells that how much nitrogen dioxide is there in the air (Clark, 2013).

because the construction activities cause pollution too. So, if there is already lot of pollutants
present in the environment, then the companies will have to stop their activities or they will have
to take appropriate measures to curb the problem.
c. Sound level meter
This device is used for measuring the sounds that travels through the air (Hinds, 2012). It is used
by the construction and manufacturing companies because there is a lot of noise which is
produced at the construction sites due to heavy equipment, machinery, radios etc.
Problems with the current solutions
In the above discussion, there are only a few of the devices and equipment that are shown. The
construction and manufacturing companies uses much more equipment for determining the speed

For different locations, different equipment is required and the data has to collect from
each location, combined and analyzed. This takes a lot of time and effort and the results
may not be appropriate.
The communication infrastructure cannot be established between these devices.
They require manual testing and manual recording of data.
The business performance is suffered due to use of this equipment because they delay the
decision making. For example: if there is a threat of any natural disaster, the automatic
information cannot be derived from them, somebody will have to check it and if the
threat is very high, the proper decision cannot be taken in that situation.
The above discussions clearly indicate that there is no standard and reliable method that can
communicate the required information in the wireless way and hand over the processed data to
the base station.
Therefore, all the companies in UK and in other countries should adopt the wireless sensor
network technology.

Chapter 2: Research on successful innovation tools
Brainstorming
Brainstorming is a short and rapid procedure that enables the development of new thoughts and
ideas. Potential problems are easier to identify and as a result resolutions to any potential
problems could be offered (Kerzner, 2013).
There are four basic rules in brainstorming as described by Osborn to increase creativity:
(Osborn, 1963)
• No critique
• Focus on quantity

The positive factors which are under control and can be utilized for the benefit in the
future are the strength factors. These are classified as per the area of expertise of the

Chapter 3: Critical Evaluation of the innovation tools
1. Brainstorming helps the project managers in addressing the particular problems so that
they can evaluate and develop many solutions and ideas in a short period of time. It can
help in redesigning the creative development of the solution of WSN. In this tool, the
people who are not valuable or the ideas that are irrelevant are not included. Also, the
information is shared, participants cooperate with each other and thus, the project is
benefitted. The activity of the brainstorming is carried out in a professional way.
2. In the other tool which is the SWOT analysis, the points are placed in four of the
quadrants in a very rational and organized way. Though, the generation of ideas does not
happen in this, but the strategic decisions related to the project can be taken using the
SWOT. The points in this analysis are established with the help of facts and data like the
financial data etc. The strategy is developed when the strength of the product is
determined; the opportunities for going forward are specified.
According to me, SWOT will work the best because if in case there is any issue or any solution
that lacks in my WSN, then it will be identified, it will be external and I can deal with it or
prepare for it in advance. It will also help my project managers and the related people to
brainstorm and I will be able to do strategic planning for my project. Thus, for the long term
success of my project, I should go the SWOT analysis only.
Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is an activity of forming something new and to revise and revisit the already
established things. It is a way of innovating and leading and it helps in extending the new and
established processes to the other sectors of society (Drucker, 2014). Starting some new is not

called as entrepreneurship, but to do it differently is entrepreneurship. I can be considered as an
entrepreneur because I am trying to put my knowledge and abilities to create something new and

Chapter 4: Finalizing the solutions
I will finalize my solution of WSN by conducting a SWOT analysis of the technique and
comparing it with the other methods that are currently used.
Strengths:
Communicate this information in the
wireless way and hand over the
processed data to the base station.
Monitor and Record the conditions of
the different locations and pass the data
collected to a main location with the
help of a network.
They are inexpensive to install and to
monitor.
For different locations, single
equipment is required and the data can
combine and analyzed. This takes less
time and effort and the results are
appropriate.
The communication infrastructure can
be established between these devices.
They do not require manual testing and
Weaknesses
Consumes higher power
The alarming solutions are not
available.
The frequency of gathering the data is
low.

Chapter 5: Marketing of the product
The product will be marketed to the contractors of construction and manufacturing projects, the
consultants, engineers, property companies etc. with the help of demo. This means that personal
selling will be used to market the product because that is the only way by which people will be
able to see its benefits and uses. Also, this will help in developing the reputation of the company
and the product. Apart from this, online method will be used to market the product like the
website will be developed that will talk about all the uses and benefits of this new method.

Chapter 6: Environmental and social impact of engineering design
The method is very simple and therefore, it does not have any significant impact on the
environment. No harmful substances are released that cause pollution to the environment or
harmful tests are required to be carried out for this method. So, this particular engineering design
is safe for the environment.
Since the method will have an impact on the competitors, therefore, some amount of social
impact will be there related to WSN. The number of advertisements will be more in this case.
