Chapter 1: IntroductionWireless Sensor Network is formed when many of the self-powered small sensing nodes arecollected and they gather information from the field in which they are deployed. They thencommunicate this information in the wireless way and hand over the processed data to the basestation. The use of WSN technology is increasing in this fast changing world with a purpose toestablish a bridge between the real and the virtual worlds (Aparicio, 2013). It has provided greatsupport to the operation management of an organization. WSN technology has been of great useof the construction industries of United Kingdom. In the manufacturing and constructioncompanies, the wireless sensor networks are used for monitoring and recording the conditions ofthe different locations and passing the data collected to a main location with the help of anetwork. The parameters which WSN technology monitors include the temperature, direction ofthe wind, humidity, pressure, speed, voltage in the power line, level of pollutants, intensity ofsound, vital body functions, illumination intensity and intensity of vibration. In this report, the current methods that are used for determining the speed and direction of wind, level of humidity, pressure, voltage, pollutants, sound intensity etc. in the construction industrywill be evaluated in relation to the wireless sensor network. The WSN gives every organization atechnology which helps in monitoring the environment in which it is operating and analyzing theenvironment and various aspects of the environment so as to execute the activities of theconstruction industry in a better manner (Haule, 2014). The WSN technology that is proposed inthis report for the companies to adopt, will justify the highlights of it and prove that is morereliable, inexpensive and simple to use than the other solutions that the companies adopt. The current solutionsa.Wind Tunnel2
This tool is used to study the effects of the air moving past the solid objects. This tool helps inmeasuring the aerodynamic forces, the distribution of the pressure and other characteristics of theaerodynamics (Hinds, 2012). These are specifically used by the construction industries whenthey have to determine the force of such winds before building the codes that specifies therequired strength of such buildings. b.Diffusion TubesThese tubes have a cap which is coated with triethanolamine (TEA), which is a chemical thathelps in absorption of the nitrogen dioxide. When the gases or air pass over it, the change in thechemical happens and tells that how much nitrogen dioxide is there in the air (Clark, 2013).These tubes are used by the construction industries to determine the level of pollutants in the air3
