Possible reasons for the crack
To investigate the crack, it is first prudent to know the major causes of the crack, which includes;
a manufacturing defect, incorrect tension in the tie bolts particularly for slow speed engine, as
well as excess loads on the transverse girder emanating from high load combustions due to
excess output power.

(a) Majorly, the deterioration of in service is due to abrasion; which is due to the mixing of
residual cylinder oil and carbon deposits and upon smearing on the piston rod; results into wear.
(b) Upon the detachment of a unit, all parts of the diaphragm gland box get dismantled and then
examined. The parts which are found to be defective are considered worn out hence no longer fit
to be used, thus they get renewed including the gutter springs. For the scrapper elements, their
edges will be scrapped upon establishing sighs of wear out. Also, the drain hole within the gland
box needs to be cleared (Carlton, 2018).
(c) To restore effectiveness, below are some steps to be taken;
 Packing elements:- this entails attaching the metal body using an appropriate scrapping
metal throughout its surface.
 The tension within the garter spring is maximized by shortening suitably their length,
 The worn-out elements are renewed through scrapping, including their edges.
(d) The sealing is the upper section that inhibits leakage of the mixture of cylinder oil and carbon
going into the crankcase. On the lower part is the scrapper rings, which prevents the entry of oil
from crankcase entering under piston space or into scavenge space (Young et al., 2016)
