ADVANCED NETWORK DESIGN
Introduction
Barranquilla plaza wireless network is very poor and have issues like dropped
connections, insufficient capacity, and dead zones. The hotel have five rooms which are multiple
restaurants, reception area, a bar, pool area, and guest room. The current generic network
diagram layout is as shown by the figure one below. This paper will present a network redesign
for the hotel and to do that this paper will present a sample questionnaire as a means of gathering
the network requirements. The second will demonstrate a network redesign of the organization
with the required IP addressing. The demonstration will stress on the hardware platform
required.

Questionnaire
Questionnaire to non-IT staff members
1. Please provide the organization chart and list of their contacts
2. Which are the network components which are utilized by the organization i.e. switches,
wireless products, firewalls, routers, etc.
3. The name of Internet service provider for the hotel
Questionnaire to the IT staff
1. Please provide a list of all the hotel network infrastructure components which includes
the asset owner, manufacturer, model, IP address, location, and component name (Fill in
the table below). If device is not available just indicate N/A. You can add the devices
which are not indicated in the table [1]

5. How does the hotel learn about the new releases, hot-fixes, or service packs?
6. What are the procedures and policies for upgrading and installing new software?
7. Are the hotel routers connected to a UPS system?
8. How to do you monitor users on the network?
9. What capacity has the hotel subscribed from their ISP?
10. The estimated number of users who users the hotel network at peak hours?
Purpose of each question
General questions
Organization chart
An organization chart is a graphical representation of the company structure. The reason
as to why it is needed is show the relationship within the organization. By looking at the
organization chart one is able to tell how the organization is designed.
Network components
One of the things to consider during network redesign is current network components
which have been laid in the organization. This assist the designing team to know which devices
to upgrade [2].
ISP
In Australia there are several ISP providers and an organization can utilize any but during
network redesign it is very important to tell which ISP that the organization have utilized so that
the network engineer can advise the best ISP that the hotel needs to consider.
Questionnaire to the IT staff
The IT staff needs to list all the network equipment with model, IP address allocated, the
number, the model and their location i.e. table 1 will assists the network engineers tell exactly

the devices which are out of date and which devices are located in the wrong place. In addition,
this is one method of site survey.
Logical design and physical design
Logical design assists the network engineers in showing the logical aspect of the hotel
network. In here the engineers will know the assigned IP address to the various devices and hosts
and the routing table implemented by the hotel. With physical design, one is able to tell the
connections between the devices. Lastly logical and physical design assist the network engineer
in knowing how the hotel goes about troubleshooting and network security.
New releases, hot-fixes, or service packs and policies and procedures of upgrading
One of the reasons as to why the hotel could be facing poor connections could because
the hotel have not updated their network devices. With this question, the network engineers will
tell how the hotel goes about fixing network components patches. The second question will tell
how the hotel goes about upgrading their software and after how long.
UPS
This question will assists the network engineers to know if they is a power back-up
mechanism in place. Most are the times when power is gone then the router loses its
configuration.
Internet capacity
One of the reasons as to why the hotel could be facing poor connections could be because
they have subscribed very internet bandwidth. This question assists in telling the Mbs that the
hotel have subscribed
Document Page
Estimated number of users
This question tells the number of users who are using the organization network. It also
helps in comparing the Mbs capacity together with the number of users.
Validation and verification plan
The gathered requirements have led to identification of network redesign scope. The
engineer were to be able to ascertain that the network redesign is only for the hotel. In addition,
the design is for a set of hotel campus LAN and switching the technology to a GPON network
design. The steps for requirements collection was done as highlighted in the figure below

Proposed logical design
For this case, this paper will go for a cisco SAFE type of logical design. The design will
have three functional areas which are the internet edge which contains the organization firewall,
and firewall, the core distribution, and the access [3]. This is a shown by the figure two below
Figure 2: Proposed CISCO SAFE architecture
Proposed physical design
Points of upgrade
The hotel has utilized cat5e type of cabling, the hotel needs to shift Optical cable. Second
the hotel needs to make the central switch manageable so as to give more control over the hotel
LAN traffic. In addition, a manageable switch the hotel will have the ability to control how data
levels travel over the hotel network [4].
Rather than using the current hierarchical network design, the hotel needs to shift to a
GPON type of design. As shown by figure 3, it is a type of design which utilizes passive splitters
so as to divide a network into a single optical connection to serve several endpoints. Taking into
Document Page
account the current network design one can pass one fiber from Optical Line Terminal. This in
turn will result to an increase of bandwidth up to 10GGPON [3].
Figure 3: GPON physical design
The network engineer needs to divide the GPON network design into three layers which
are the core, access, and the distribution layer. The access layer is where the workgroup and
users are located near to the resources of the organization network. The distribution layer will
serve as a communication point between the core and the access layer. The devices located in
this layer are the ONL which are used to provide WAN access and filtering. Lastly is the core
layer which is responsible for large amount of traffic. This is where the Optical splitter is located.
Figure 4 shows the three layered approach of a GPON design [5].
