AI Summary
This proposal outlines the requirements and design for an advanced network for a two-floor institution with provisions for internet and efficient communication. It covers hardware requirements, network design model, IP addressing, and network mask. The proposed network design is scalable, reliable, manageable, and secure, using a three-layered hierarchical design model. The IP addressing details are provided for a class B network supporting up to 150 hosts.

Introduction
In coming up with a good design in any network that need to be set up one must come up with a
good plan with all the requirements and needs of the organisation where the network is to be set.
A good network design will always ensure that communication is effective and efficient in all
manners. Many are times when network design are set but they disappoint in future as one has to
go back to the drawing board and draw another design from scratch as the already set network
design cannot be expanded hence not allowing the scalability feature. In the ICT field the term
network information technology infrastructure is where all the devices that are connected to the
network with an aim of sharing resources such as the printer, scanner, data and many others [1].
The network design plan is entirely dependent on the size of the organization and its
requirements and much more its expansion rate has also to be considered [2]. The proposal here
below is giving out an idea of what to expect in such a scenario where we have to design a
network for two floors and offering provisions for the internet to the whole institution and
making communication efficient without problems. The areas to be covered in details will be
choosing the hardware and the network devices to be used, choosing the network design model
and then drawing the logical diagram as all explained in details here below.
Project Scope
For a successful implementation of the network we must come up with a good logical design that
will be used in laying down the physical network. The understanding is that this is entirely
implementation of the network from scratch and the anticipated network design should allow
room for expansion (meaning it should be flexible and scalable) making it suitable in all
situations. As a technician I have to come up with all the requirements of the institution, do the
analysis of the requirements so that I come with a plan stating all the needs, then do the logical
design and from this I can lay down the physical design of the entire network. The scope of the
project is based on the logical design diagram, hardware requirements, configurations of network
devices, the way the network is entirely designed, the cabling and types of cables used etc.
Requirements of the Hardware
This section gives details of what the hardware we require should have. When starting a new
network design from scratch then it is accompanied with different hardware’s and the

Specifications of such hardware’s must be matched with the institution requirements. The hardware will be used in laboratories,
classrooms, libraries, management and the admin blocks. The table below explains some of the major hardware’s and their minimal
specifications.
Hardware Manufacturer Model and Series Port Specifications Quantity
1 Server IBM System i5890 60 Support lower and higher models of the range of 270-890, the architecture is
integrated, it is integrated with the DB2-UDB which has features such as R-
technology, its connection uses the TCP/IP and supports VPN, and it can be
integrated in windows.

2 Switch Cisco Cisco Sge2010 48 This It has 48 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, 256 active VLANs can be supported
and expansion of to a maximum of about 192 ports. Can be configures and
monitored from a standard web browser, capacity forwarded is about 71.4 Mbps,
ACLs for granular security and the QoS.
10
3 Router Cisco 810 series 8 The dimensions are 2.01 x 8.95 x 9.49 inches (51 x 227x 241 mm), a power source
of 100–240 VAC, offers secure connectivity, uses Cisco Operating System and
supports 4 to 8 GE LAN ports, supports 3G
1
4 PCs HP Core i5 7th gen 8 -a mini-tower which core i5 of 7th generation of a maximum of about 3.5ghz, the
memory cache is about 6mb. Speed of memory is about 2.4ghz whose memory is
8GB that can be expanded to 64GB RAM. Capacity storage of about 1TB.
Supports both HDMI and VGA and much more it support Ethernet, Fast Ethernet,
Gigabit Ethernet as the data link protocol
110
5 IP Phone Cisco Cisco 7965G -5” TFT display, support wideband of up to G722, also supports codec of about
G722, supports duplex headphones, Internal 2-port Cisco Ethernet switch allows
for a direct connection to a 10/100/1000,supports code point device and has an
option of add module.

Network Design Model
In any design one must have some factors to consider in all ways that must be based on the
demands and needs of the organizations [3]. Data security is very key and how easy it is to
troubleshoot will help us in defining what kind of network design model we will apply in this
context [4]. There are some requirements guiding us in which model to select.
1. Technical requirements
2. Additional features and functions needed to be determined
3. Site plan creation
4. Overall plan creation.
For all the devices to be used efficiently then the above considerations must be followed
promptly as they strive to meet the needs of the user. There are four requirements which are so
vital an need to be addressed in the design of the model named as the scalability, reliability,
manageability and the security of the network [5]. The scalability and security requirement has
driven us to choosing the three-Layered-hierarchical design model which is as explained here
below.
Figure 1 3-Layered Hierarchical design
1. Core layer- connects the distributed services in the distribution layer
2. Distribution Layer- connecting network devices in small networks e.g. classroom

3. Access layer- providing the connection between network hosts and the devices of the end-user.

IP Addressing and Network Mask
Since the institution anticipated network is expected to be expanded in future then it will be wise to give the devices proper Ip address
and network mask that will be able to hosts other devices added in future [6]. The case rested above will use the IP address of class B
supporting the scalability and the flexibility of the network. With about 150 hosts then the following IP addressing details may be used
assuming the network IP address is 192.50.0.0.
