2ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSING PHILOSOPHY
Introduction
I am an advanced practice nurse, experienced in providing short term acute care to patients
post-surgery. After my bachelors in nursing from WSSU, I have been involved in providing
acute care to post-surgical patients for 9.5 years where I have been involved in acute short
term care to provide functioning support and fast recovery of the patients from illnesses and
surgery. It is due to this experience that I have decided to pursue post-graduation in nursing
from WSSU. My learning opportunities in WSSU have helped me to develop my leadership
skills and perform as educator, charge nurse and clinical supervisor in different medical
areas. WSSU has provided me with opportunities to excel in comprehensive assessments,
implementing care plans and treatments and interventions with collaborative efforts with
physicians and staffs. According to me, advanced practice nursing involves holistic care to
patients to understand and eliminate the underlying factors of illness, thereby relieving the
symptoms through therapeutic interventions honouring the patient dignity. Based on nursing
care theory, complete patient care through meeting all their needs is a prime nursing goal in
advanced nursing practice (Butts & Rich, 2018). My professional goals, thereby involve
being a successful family nurse practitioner providing extensive education and complete care
among families and children to promote health care, disease prevention and health
management. I would like to extend my nursing skills and abilities to educate, diagnose,
design and implement treatment plans and provide exceptional patient care in all clinical
settings. Helping patients to conquer their fears during illness and treatment would be my
challenging role.

concerned with nursing interventions which are applied through knowledge based skills,

technical skills and awareness to provide direct and indirect quality care to patients in order
to improve their health conditions (Ramezani et al., 2014). The persons or the patients are the
recipients of nursing care. Patients can be family, friends, community persons and children.
The concept of environment and society refers to internal and external environments and
social factors which are concerned with improvement in health (Alimohammadi et al., 2014).
Advanced practice in nursing involves extended health care to patients through high
educational qualifications and interpersonal skills. Collaborative efforts with physicians and
patients help in proper design and implementing treatment methods. Health concept varies
according to different perspectives and differing cultural backgrounds. It refers to the
wellbeing of physical, social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual states.
Diversity and health promotion
According to my personal philosophy of nursing, diversity in health care extends health
promotion to diverse population and improves the quality of life through quality care. The
outcome is increased patient satisfaction and increased patient acceptance. According to
Madeline Leininger, cultural care diversity is important in nursing profession. Applying her
diversity theory, nurses should be educated about cultural backgrounds of patients and focus
on the cultural assessments to provide extensive and exceptional patient care (Abitz, 2016).
Diversity in healthcare particularly cultural diversity is significant in promoting health among
diverse populations. I feel, diverse population feels restrained to open up and get treatment
from health care staffs of differing diversity. Thus, according to my personal view, promoting
diversity in nursing professions allows patients and their families to readily agree to the
nurses’ care. Wide diversity therefore allows greater number of people to seek medical
assistance and improve their health condition. Cultural diversity among nursing professionals
leads to an increase in interpersonal skills which enables nurses to identify, understand and
eliminate the roots of illness (Betancourt et al., 2016). I believe, diversity helps in building
technical skills and awareness to provide direct and indirect quality care to patients in order
to improve their health conditions (Ramezani et al., 2014). The persons or the patients are the

relational bonding with the patients which causes faster recovery and increased patient
satisfaction. Communication barriers are often encountered while consulting with physicians
and nurses. Therefore, I feel that promoting diversity helps to overcome communication
barriers and cultural differences among health staffs and patients. According to my nursing
perception, achieving patient comfort is essential in nursing profession that can be better
achieved through diversity promotion. Health care is a human right according to my thoughts.
Every individual has the right to maintain optimal health status through seeking medical
assistance (Kleinert & Horton, 2017). Illness can be defined as a subjective concept which
determines the personal state of experience of a patient in sickness and requires nursing care.
Advanced practice nurse qualities
Advanced practice nurses are registered nurses with high educational qualifications.
Communication skills, interpersonal skills, feeling of empathy, attention to minute medical
details of patient illness, extreme tenacity in patient care, critical problem solving skills in
medical issues and resolving power are some of the core qualities of registered nurses which
are common to advanced practice nurses (Dowling et al., 2013). According to my nursing
perceptions, advanced practice nurses establish inter relational bonding with the patients to
understand the patients’ emotional and mental states; they empathize with the patients and
treat them as individuals with dignity. Providing patient centred care is another ideal quality
of advanced practice nurses according to my nursing thoughts.
Conclusion
Nursing care is a holistic approach to promote patient comfort and improve their
quality of life. Diversity in healthcare allows proper mix of ideas among health care nurses,
as a result it promotes better understanding and communication between patient and nurse.
