Intro
Aging is a physical, social and psychological change in a human over time. This is a
biological process among humans and other living creatures of getting older. Discrimination is
also done on the basis of age and the practice is termed as ageism. Different basic rights of
aged people are violated due to this discrimination. Aged people face different issues in terms
of health, income, and mental support. The government has framed different policies like the
age discrimination act, which protects the rights of older people. In this part of the worksheet,
discussion about age discrimination in employment act is done. Moreover, the evaluation of
this act is one about its ability to address issues faced by an aging population.
Thesis statement: Policies and continuous development can help to eradicate ageism
from the society to establish diversity.
What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society?
Ageism can be defined as discrimination against people from the elder age group.
According to McLaughlin (2018), the consequences of aging prevent the aging population
from getting equal opportunities. Due to this prejudice, people think that older people are not
capable of taking an active part in all the social works. Sometimes, the term ageism is used for
defining the discrimination against children as adolescents as well.

Ageism influences social diversity by preventing older people from taking part in all
kinds of social activities. For example, ageism in the workplace increases the number of young
employees. In any social program, diversity cannot be maintained if older people are being
discriminated at that place. Hence, it can be stated that diversity cannot be maintained within
the society as ageism is one of the main reasons of discrimination.
What is the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)? How does the ADEA address issues
for the aging population?
In 1968, age discrimination in employment act came into effect. This act has been passed to
protect workers who are 40 years of age or over. ADEA protects older employees from being
fired due to their age (Sargeant, 2016). In many institutions, older employees are replaced
with younger employees, which creates economic and mental issues for old age people.
Moreover, this replacement is done because the younger employees can be hired at lower
salaries. Supreme court increased federal protection in the year of 1996 against age
discrimination and stated that this law can be applied if an employee aged 40 is replaced by a
person who is older. This kind of bad practice is also included in age discrimination
(Barrington, 2015).
Previous research states that before the implementation of ADEA, many people faced
aging discrimination in terms of hiring. In addition, Voss, Bodner & Rothermund (2018)
stated that previously older people faced different discrimination during promotions and
training. These kinds of discrimination have been addressed by the enactment of ADEA.
Implementing this act has addressed the issue of poverty in the aging population.

Conclusion
From the entire discussion regarding aging, it can be concluded that ageism is preventing older
people from taking part in all the social activities. There are many people who think that older
people are not able enough to work equally like others. The ADEA has been developed for
protecting the basic rights of the employment of older people. This act is focusing on the
factors including mental health and income of older people. It is important for the government
to develop and introduce more policies that can help older people to get equal opportunities at
all social levels. This aspect can make older people more confident about their abilities and
they can fight more to get what they deserve. Hence, it can be said that policies and
continuous development can help to remove ageism from the society for establishing diversity.
