AIRPORT PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT2Summary The purpose of this study is to review the planning and development of the airports on behalf of the European Commission DG MOVE. This report has been put in place to identify the major issues that face the airports and proposals to address these issues. The report aims to compare Heathrow and Gatwick airports. They reason why these two airports were chosen is because theyhave been termed among the biggest airports in the UK. Concretely, the company clearly identified the need to include airports more fully within the network of the European Aviation. This report has also concentrated on several issues faced by both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.These issues comprised of ground access, environmental issues, airport buildings and social and political roles of the airports. The main objective of this report is to help the airports, the entire community including the development planers to systematically pilot the early planning and consultation stages that are related to the potential airport developments that would lead to the approval of the council. While this report is not intended to be a technical guide in terms of the regulations of the air transportation industry, funding or particular approach to the development of the airport, it does serve as a planning and project management tool to ensure that a vigorous approach is undertaken in the early planning and consultation, a good understanding of trends, requirements and gaps is achieved, conversations among the key stakeholders and interest groupsis resolute, and users are able to effectively choose various approaches to pre-approval planning.

AIRPORT PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT4Introduction Airport planning and development has been known to be crucial for the success of any airport. Itoffers a foundation for growth of an airport through the creation of a plan not only for the development but also for the processes used in the implementation of the planned projects. The modern day airports are no longer locations where airplanes just land and take off, but have advanced into major business ventures (Ashfod, Mumayiz, & Wright, 2011). The airports have become imperative hubs in the international space of flows which had led to urban growth, employment opportunities and income generating business. Just like any other business enterprise, the airports have been incurring risks and costs with numerous setbacks to look out for calling the need for some efficient planning and development. Planning has been known to provide a framework for the establishment of a baseline of existing land uses and also gets to forecast any future growths. In order to determine planning and development, this report has focused on two major airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.
