AIRSERVICES AUSTRALIA
AIRSERVICES AUSTRALIA
Australia has its biggest investments in air services which, unfortunately is facing drastic
challenges due to the rising technological changes. In the next 10 years, Air-services Australia is
anticipated to face the following key challenges;
1. The introduction of unmanned aerial vehicles such as the use of drones will have a
negative influence on the economy in terms of the agricultural sector and put public
safety at risk (Australia, 2019). However, Human Resource Management suggests that
this is controlled since the use of drones will promote job creations of over 100000 jobs
which is a benefit to the economy. Besides, drones are predicted to improve growth in
plants by reducing their subjection to diseases. They have also created a program
(Airspace Modernisation Program) that will promote safety in the aviation industry and
deal with air entrants.
2. Airservices are anticipated to suffer from the increasing Remotely Piloted Aircraft
Systems that ignore the safety precautions about the community and other aircraft
(Matthew L. James, 2017). To curb this, the Human Resource Management has formed
the Onesky program that works to manage air traffic issues in Australia by improving the
air traffic substructure and other facilities that promote safety.
3. The rapidly increasing number of non-traditional vehicles will make it hard for the
international aviation sector to maintain a safe and reliable network that braces the future
expansion in the air mobility systems that are emerging, as they make sure to maintain
safety. However, Human Resource Management is working on monitoring these gradual
changes and familiarize them with them before-hand thus making it responsive and
flexible to the incoming changes.
Recruiting trainee air traffic control candidates is an in-depth process that involves a series of
steps (Jason Harfield, 2020). The first four steps are as discussed below;
1. Application form- candidates have to have met all the requirements before submitting
their application, that is, attained the specified age, met all the academic qualifications
and the public obligations defined.

2. Online assessment- this is an assessment that candidates fill from home. It is done to test
their ability, aptitude, knowledge, skills, and morale to achieve. This assessment mainly
tests their arithmetical reasoning and calculations, their ability to speak verbally,
evaluation and structural tests.
3. Assessment center- this is a whole day activity done to assess the candidate’s suitability
for the job that takes place at a learning institution in Melbourne Airport. It entails
interviews to test their competency skills, drug tests, communication skills, and computer
skills.
4. Reference check- this is the step where candidates are expected to provide a list of their
references, mainly recent managers. References are used to confirm that the applicant is
who they say to be and the latter are informed before contacting their references.
Airservices Australia considers this step-wise process for selecting trainee aircraft controllers
efficient and effective because air traffic is a very high responsibility and stressful job that
requires maximum attentiveness (Jason Harfield, 2020). Air traffic controllers have a job to
maintain aviation security both internally and externally of the aircraft environment and control
and direct movements of more than one aircraft simultaneously. Besides, their work environment
is a very tough one as they work both day and night, in continuous shifts and during weekends.
Due to this heavy task, Airservices Australia has to choose the best deserving and committed
workers eligible for the job hence the long recruiting process.
Airservices Australia does not consider previous aviation experience when recruiting air traffic
controllers (Edwin Ha, 2020). It would be appropriate for them to recruit for aptitude and train
the employees with the necessary qualities. This is because; an aptitude test reveals one's abilities
and talents in a certain area. The employer will certainly recruit the contestant talented in aircraft
controlling and then train them with specific qualities. It is a competitive advantage as they have
unique abilities and skills that are out of the common. Aptitude tests reveal the weak points of
the recruits in terms of their educational background showing their level of competence (Jason
Harfield, 2020). Airservices Australia should, therefore, recruit for aptitude as many people are
contesting for the relatively few jobs and this will help them chose the candidate with the most
advantage. Air traffic controlling is a task that requires perfectionism as it deals with the safety

of people, that is, aircraft and the community. Recruiting employees using aptitude will enable
Airservices Australia to put all the contestants on a fairground without bias. They will, therefore,
offer a job to the most deserving competent candidate contrast to using the interview method
which does not perfectly bring out all the qualities of the interviewee. Use of Aptitude is not a
one to one activity thus making it more efficient and reliable since the contestant is under no
pressure to respond or anxious about what an interviewer will react to their responses.
