Running Header: CHALLENGES FACING POLICEMEN IN CURBING HOMICIDE IN THE
U.S
Homicide may be defined as an act where a person kills another. Homicide cases in the United States are
on the rise despite much government effort in controlling and curbing it. The police in particular face a lot
of challenges when trying to curb cases oh homicides. Some of these many problems are as discussed
below (Hough & McCorkle, 2019).
Firstly, a lack of a working and effective gun control policy impairs the policemen efforts to curb the
rampant rate of killings. It is not strange in the United States to meet people carrying all types of guns. In
this case pulling the trigger in order to kill another person becomes an easy task. A lack of an efficient
policy has claimed so many lives as a result of open gun fires or even aimed gun shots. This becomes
difficult for the police unit to effectively control unforeseen killings.
Secondly, a lack of a radical policy in the judicial system to punish those proven guilty of coming
homicide. There have been cases in the recent years where perpetrators of homicide have walked out of
court scot-free despite being found guilty. The reason being that one or the entire team handling the case
have been bribed. This demoralizes the police unit who will be more reluctant to act the next time such an
act occurs. Instead if these law breakers are consistently and indiscriminately punished then it will serve
as a lesson to others who are of the same plan and behavior. For example, the recent release of the
Colombian warlord.
Lastly, drug and substance abuse is a challenge that cripples the police unit’s attempts to curb homicide.
There have been several cases where a person has killed another or even dozens as a result of substance
abuse. The use of some drugs cause unusual aggression in a person causing him/her to kill or even harm
other people. The issue of homicide cases as a result of drug abuse have been on the rise thus diluting the
police’s attempts to lower the rates.
