Overview
AMSN was founded in 1991 and it is the only nursing organization in the world that
specializes in the field of medical-surgical nursing. AMSN has a total number of 11,500
nurses who are committed to improving patient care and advocating for the medical-surgical
field while at the same time connecting with others in the same profession (AMSN, 2018).
AMSN’s main objectives include improving the medical-surgical profession, developing
standards that guide nursing practice and establishing a curriculum that guides the medical-
nursing (AMSN, 2018).
Mission, Vision and Values
AMSN’s mission is to promote excellence in the practice of medical-surgical nursing
while the vision states that nursing in medical-surgery is a specialty field that has its own
source of knowledge (AMSN, 2018). The values of AMSN include: Believing that
continuous development ensures patients will receive better care, ensuring nurses have the
resources to provide excellent care, having all medical-surgical nurses speaking in one voice,
ensuring all nurses are working in a health environment and are serving as leaders in
healthcare teams (AMSN, 2018).
Advantages of Being a Member (AMSN, 2018):
a) AMSN membership allows you access to the latest educational resources such as
MEDSURG Nursing journals and the AMSN E-newsletter as well as attending the
AMSN Annual Convention.
b) Nurses in medical-surgery can be supported with financial aid when seeking further
education.
c) It is easier to find a job because members will have access to the AMSN Career
Center.
d) Members can share clinical questions and research in the AMSN Hub online
community discussion forum for members only.

e) AMSN members can be able to save money with discounts for Certified Medical-
Surgical RN certification course, the AMSN convention, Certified in Care

Membership Requirements
To become a member of Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, one has to have
training in the medical-surgical field or in any field of healthcare as a Registered Nurse,
Licensed Practical Nurse or a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Experience is preferable but we
accept applications from new graduates and we have virtual student membership for fulltime
students taking medical-surgical or healthcare studies (AMSN, 2018).

Organizational Collaborations and Endorsements:
The following organizations have endorsed AMSN; American Nurses Association
(ANA) organizational affiliate, Americans for Nursing Shortage Relief (ANSR), Ascension
Health, Health Stream, End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), National
Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS), National Quality Forum (NQF),
National Student Nurses Association (NSNA), American Nurses Association (ANA)
Congress of Nursing Practice and Economics, American Society of Association Executives
(ASAE), Nursing Organizations Alliance, Phillips Healthcare (AMSN, 2018).
The 2014 winner of the AMSN Career Mobility Scholarship, Roque Anthony
Velasco, was able to go back to school and successfully graduate with a Bachelor of Science
in Medical/Surgical Infectious diseases. He owes his success to his local chapter of AMSN
which enabled him to be actively involved in quality improvement projects, medical
missions, nursing conference presentations and volunteer activities (Velasco, 2018).
UPCOMING EVENTS: There will be an Annual AMSN Convention on from the 13th to
16th of September 2018 at Coronado Springs, Florida where new recruits can “Come
and Discover how High they can Fly” by enhancing their knowledge, engaging with
other nurses and exploring new career opportunities. All are welcome!
