To explore principles of project management in textile industry.
Objectives
ï‚· To understand the meaning of project management and its importance in textile industry.
ï‚· To evaluate the process of project management in textile industry.
ï‚· To investigate the principles of project management.
Organization Overview
Textile Industry: This industry mainly comprises of design, production and distribution of cloth,
yarn and clothings. All the raw materials used for manufacturing may be natural or synthetic by
using all the products of chemical industry.
Organization: Richard Haworth and co. is a manufacturing firm in Manchester and Salford. It is
a part of Ruia Group which comprises of various companies that are a part of textile industry.
Literature Review
According to (Kerzner and Kerzner, 2017), Project management can be defined as the
application of methods, processes, skills, knowledge and experience in order to achieve project
objectives. In this planning, organizing and management of resources and tasks is done so that
the main objective can be achieved. Project management is extremely important in textile
industry as it helps in managing all the process related to manufacturing, packaging etc. It also
helps in fulfilling all the fulfilling all the set expectations, completing packaging and delivering
the deliverables of the project (Kerzner, 2019). It will help the textile industry in completing
manufacturing of products in a timely manner in such a way that its quality can be ensured all the
negotiation that are required to achieve all the deadlines or milestones across all the stakeholders,
team, management etc. Deadlines such as manufacturing of all the products on time, delivering
all the products on time, maintaining the quality of the products etc.
As per the view of (Schwalbe, 2015), There are various other factors that make project
management important and increase its importance in textile industry.
Strategic Alignment: Project management helps in ensuring what is being delivered and
in a timely manner. It will help textile industry organizations to identify all of their deliverables
so that they will be able to able to ensure whether all of their goals can be completed on time or
not.

Leadership: It also helps in improving the leadership of the leaders which also helps in
directing the project. It will help managers of textile industry in showing their managerial and
leadership skills such that they direct completion of all the deliverables on time.
Clear focus and objectives: it also helps in proper execution of plan in order to achieve
strategic well defined goals. It also help complete project team to work in a proper manner so
that they can focus on achieving their targeted objectives.
Realistic project planning: As it has already been discussed above that project
management helps ensuring proper that all the project expectations have been fulfilled and can
be achieved within a specific time period. Within textile industry it can help in defining realistic
goals for their team such that they can easily achieve the desired target and manufacture all the
products accordingly.
Quality control: If all the project goals are set with a realistic deadline, then it can be
completed on time and this will help them in controlling the quality of all the products i.e.
quality of manufactured products will not be degraded and will be maintained.
Risk management: All these things will also help in managing all the risk, in fact chances
of increased risk can also be minimized. This will also help in planning mitigation strategies in
order to avoid any further issues so that any other type of complications chances can be reduced.
Orderly process: Project management helps in ensuring right process of complete project.
As it is said that right people do all the right things at right time. Completely planned process
helps in smoothing complete process so that it can be completed on time.
Continuous Oversight: this further helps in tackling and tracking complete progress of the
project on time. If everything such as packaging, manufacturing, delivering is managed on time
then it will help in getting an oversight of the project and further actions can be taken.
Subject matter expertise: Project management is extremely important for all the managers
involved in the project as it helps them to get an overview of how the project will be completed
and whether all the team members are completing their desired part on time and in an efficient
manner or not.
Managing both success and failure: It also helps in managing both success and failures
related to the project so that they can manage all the risk and success factors associated with it
and try to keep their project on track.

So, as said by (Kerzner and Kerzner, 2017), All these factors helps clearly shows
importance of project management. It is also important in textile industry as all these factors
affects the organization business all the ways addressed above as the main factors that a textile
industry focuses on are quality, timely manufacturing of their products, packaging and delivery
of their final gods or products and all these phases require project management so that these
phases are completed successfully and within the specified time period.
As illustrated by (Larson and Gray, 2017), There are various processes of project
management project management which are categorized in five main areas. These phases play a
vital role in tracking all the success points of a project. These phases helps in managing all the
phases of the project and also helps in maintaining connectivity between them as well in order to
keep the project on time and can be completed on time. These phases of project management are
important especially in textile industry as it helps in managing complete manufacturing process
which includes manufacturing of cloths, cloth, yarn etc.
Further explained by (Harrison and Lock, 2017), Five phases of project management are:
Project Initiating: In this phase outline of the project is created in order to start the
project. It can be described as the main starting point of the project. All the main activities are
identified and requirements related to all the activities are identified, analysed and gathered. All
the requirements are analysed so that if any changes in the requirements or in the activity process
are identified then all these chances can be addressed on time so that project can start smoothly.
This phase ends with requirement sign off. In textile industry it is important to identify quantity
and quality required of the final goods or products so that accordingly initial amount of raw
materials required can be defined before complete process starts and final number of raw
material required can be identified and project can be started.
Project Planning: After the initiation phase planning phase is started. In this phase
timeline, schedule is prepared and based on this tasks are assigned to the team members. All the
team members are assigned their task and their role is explained to them. All the required
information is also communicated to them. It is the main phase of project management as if this
phase goes wrong then further all the steps can go wrong i.e. it can lead to negative
consequences that can work as a hindrance in the next step of the project. So, this phase plays a
vital role in project management. In this phase project deliverables are planned in order to
3

address all the requirements of the final project. In this phase requirement scope is made in order
to define the scope of the requirements of the project. Within this phase overall timeline and
budget of the project is also defined so that over budgeting threat can be reduced and project can
be completed on time. Project deliverables are divided into small deliverables so that progress of
the project can be measured and project can remain on track. In textile industry planning is
important to plan all the above mentioned things so that the budget and time of project
manufacturing can be controlled.
Project Executing: in this phase execution of the project is done where a road map is
developed. This helps the project manager to keep a track of all the team members and the task
allotted to them. It is also an important phase in manufacturing so that managers can keep a track
of all of their team members such that they can complete their tasks on time.
Project Monitoring and controlling: In this phase complete monitoring of project is done
i.e. complete progress of the project is tracked so that if any issue arises then those issues can be
tacked on time and all the required changes that are needed to be made can be be done on time.
This will help to keep the project on track and will also help in completing it on time. It is also an
important phase as in manufacturing of products there are several issues that can be created at
any time of the project so monitoring and controlling of the project plays a vital role in it.
Closing and evaluation: After achieving all the desired requirements of the project it
moves to the closure of the project. In this phase final product is delivered to the customers and
final payment is accepted by the client. Entire project is evaluated whether it was completed on
time or not.
According to (Nicholas and Steyn, 2017), Project management involves multiple
activities and all each activity involves various steps through which complete project is
completed. There are various principles which helps in controlling the time period in which
project is completed, budget within which it is to be completed. Project management principles
helps the project manager to successfully fulfil all the requirements of the project successfully.
All the principles are based upon the phases of the project management which are explained
above.
Principle 1- project goal and objective: First principle is to understand the main goal and
objective of the project. All the goals of the project should be smart.
4
Document Page
Principle 2- budgeting:Next is to understand the budget of the project.
Principle 3- estimation and schedule: Next principle is to address the estimation and schedule of
the project so that budget and time in which it is to be completed can be address.
Principle 4- defining team responsibilities: Responsibilities of all the team members is another
principle so that everyone can understand their roles and responsibility.
Principle 6- milestone: Next principle is to set all the milestones of the project
Principle 7- accountability and measurement: In this success is determined by measuring all the
success factors of defined milestones.
METHODOLOGY
Data Collection
Data collection is a process in which information is collected from all the relevant
sources in order to answer all the objectives and reach to a certain conclusion. These data
collection method helps in identifying all kinds of data that is needed for the assignment. There
are mainly two categories of data collection methods which are primary data collection method
and secondary data collection method (Palinkas and et.al., 2015). For this assignment secondary
data collection method has been used. This secondary data is the already published data which is
collected from newspapers, books, journals, magazines, online portals and from various other
sources. Here, secondary data is collected from online portals, websites, journal, articles etc.
Selected data plays an important role in terms of validity and reliability. Reliability of data is
seen by the extent till which same answers are obtained using same instruction line and validity
of data is seen by seeing the extent till will all the requirement of the assessment method has
been followed. The data and information collected for this assignment is reliable till an extent.
Data Analysis
Data analysis is a process through which data is transformed, cleaned, inspected and
modelled so that the main goal of discovering useful information that can be used to support all
the decision making related to the completion of the assessment. Data analysis is of two types i.e.
qualitative and quantitative data analysis. In Qualitative data analysis non numeric data is
referred and analysed while in quantitative data analysis numerical data is referred and analysed.
For this assessment where secondary data has been included qualitative data analysis will be
done. Further qualitative data analysis is of five types: First is content analysis where
categorization and summarization of data is done. Second is narrative analysis is where revision

of primary qualitative data is done. Third is discourse analysis, it is a type of analysis in which
naturally occurring talk and written data is done. Fourth is Framework analysis where advanced
methods is used to identify themes, frameworks, mapping, interpretation etc. is done. Fifth is
grounded theory where analysis of case is done to check whether they contribute to a theory. For
this assessment framework analysis is done and frame work thematic analysis has been done.
Literature research strategy
It is important to have search strategy for the literature of literature review section. There
are few stages that helps in searching the literature of literature review section. Foe this first of
all search term was identified and the term used for searching was 'principles + project
management + textile industry'. Using this search terms a pool of both on and offline literature
were searched which was required to complete the review. Then all the data and information
collected was filtered in such a way that it can fulfil the the main aim of the assignment. Then the
filtered data and information was again filtered as per the objectives of the assignment. While
searching the information for the literature it was kept in mind to filter only those data that are
not more than 5 years old.
FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
Theme 1: Importance of project management in textile industry
Project management helps in various ways such as it helps in strategically align all the
deliverables of the project, controlling the quality of the project, manage risk etc. In textile
industry it is important to adopt project management and its principles as it will help them to
control the quality of their products, complete manufacturing of cloths etc. on time with desired
quantity etc.
Theme 2: Phases and principles of project management
All the principles of the project management are completely based upon its phases.
