Page | 2 Executive Summary Many factors are responsible behind the success of a project. One of such factor is how effectively a project manager manages the project. The effectiveness of a project manager can be measured in terms of leadership competencies and skills acquired by him over a period of time. Project managers cannot be assumed as effective leaders because there is difference between project management and leadership. In the ever changing and complex business environment, organisations need effective leaders which motivate managers to utilize their inventive and imagination skills to complement their project management skills by way of leadership skills. The yardstick of leadership and project management lies at the heart of all successful organisations to distinguish between the performance of a project manager and project leader. Therefore, it is very important to understand the role of leadership skills and competencies of project managers on the outcomes of a project. In addition to it, other area of key focus is the project attributes that challenges the ability of project managers. Hence, it is also an important point of consideration while deciding what specific skills and competences are relevance for a particular project. This research proposal is an extension of the research brief and provides an investigation into ‘what impact does leadership skills and competencies have on the project efficacy with respect to the dissimilar nature of projects managed by a project manager. The relevance of the topic lies in the logic that all projects are not same and delivered in different environments, so combination of different competencies, skills and styles may be most important. A review of literature has also been conducted to understand the academic literature and the research done in the past, refine research objectives and develop research questions and deliverables to occur from this research. The methodology consists of the type of data to be used i.e. secondary data for this research due to ethical concerns for the students and gives insights on the approaches to be used i.e. inductive process and data analysis will be done using MAXQDA software. Finally, proposed budget (i.e. monetary costs) and research timelines has been outlined. The outline has been created in relation with the University of Adelaide’s 2020-2021 academic year. Based on the richness of the data available for research, the research provides a solid foundation of the research objective and research questions in order to provide a base for the relevance of the topic in the literature of project leadership (competencies, skills and styles) and project management within a global environment.
Page | 3 The ProblemThe problem under investigation is: ‘What is the impact of leadership skills and competencies of project managers in achieving project efficacy while dealing with projects that are dissimilar in nature?” Leadership has a great role to play in effectively managing the projects. As the ways of doing business are changing because of technological advancements as well as the nature of business environment is dynamic, it is an area continuously growing in terms of its applicability and its significance in delivering projects in a complex and unsure environment- the one who will deeply look into it, will realize the purpose of effective leadership skills and competencies in the context of project success. Therefore, it is decided to conduct research on this subject matter of project management. The History behind the problem The workforce in the organisations is one of the key assets for them. Human resources are responsible for performing many task, during which they get exposed to multiple teams and groups which make it necessary for the managers to control that human group. In the absence of effective leadership, no project can be delivered successfully. The role of professionals who work on various projects was previously meant to be coordinators, managers or directors (Ahmed at.al, 2013). But this role is rapidly evolving with the changing nature of projects in today’s globalized world. Now, the project managers require essential skills and competencies in order to lead and direct the project successfully. While working on different kinds of projects, project managers face unique challenges and are tasked to operate their project teams as profit centers (Thoms and Pinto, 1999) for successfully implementing a project. To work with people who come from different backgrounds and usually are dissimilar in nature, project managers need to attune their leadership skills to match the situations and tasks, they have been asked to address which will ultimately increase the chances of successful delivery of a project. In addition to it, two notable companies that exemplify high standards in opera houses and airliners industry drastically failed in the past.
