PART 2
PQRST ASSESSMENT
This assessment helps in treating or diagnosing the patient and helps in formulating in
words regarding the actual problem. This helps the physician in understanding the situation in
which the patient is in. This especially helps in analysing the situation of the person who is
suffering from pain. The patients sometime face various problems in detailing the exact problem
they face as the pain for every person is different. This is how, PQRST pain assessment methods
help the patient in describing and assessing the amount of pain they experience. PQRST stands
for Provocation or Palliation, Quantity or Quality, Region or Radiation, Severity Scale and
Timing respectively (Wang and et.al., 2020).
The first letter P which stands for Provocation focuses on finding the origin or cause of
pain. This lays emphasis on the actions which triggered the pain and made the pain worse. In the
given case of Tom, he suddenly realised the pain and this can be observed from his history that
most of his family members suffered from cardiac problems including his dad and uncle. Tom
was also feeling sweaty and faced pain in the chest which means the pain is due to the cardiac
problem in heart as his cholesterol is also slightly greater than the normal one and can be due to
the hereditary issue (Gauchan, 2019). Q which is the second letter focuses on the quality or
quantity helps in describing the pain in which the person can be asked about his feeling. Tom in
the given case was feeling pain initially and suddenly without any prior symptoms. This can be
interpreted that the symptoms which Tom was facing is due to the heart attack as it is faced
