SA’s GDP Contracts by 0.6% In The 3rd Quarter
The selected article heading is “SA’s GDP Contracts by 0.6% In The 3rd
Quarter”. This article says that stats of South Africa has confirmed a 3.2% of
expansion in the second quarter and GDP of South Africa has squeezed by 0.6% in
the 3rd quarter. In the contraction of GDP, agriculture, mining and manufacturing has
contributions which are contracted by 3.6%, 6% and 4% respectively (iAfrica 2019).
The stats department of South Africa has published the data and said that in
the second quarter of fiscal year 2019-20 revised 3.2% of rebounding, the economy of
South Africa has fallen in the 3rd of the same fiscal year (Statistics South Africa
2019).

of South Africa. This shows that the important role of slip in the growth of

manufacturing, mining and transport has been identified in the fall in GDP. It records
that the fall in mining is 6.1% which is driven by the fall of production in platinum
group metals as well as ore of coal and iron. The manufacturing sector is a larger than
the mining in South Africa for which a slight movement in this sector shows greter
impact on GDP. Due to the size of manufacturing sector, a negative growth of 3.9% in
this sector has influenced the GDP (Statistics South Africa 2019).
The agricultural sector is contracting from last 3 quarters. The low production
of wheat, tobacco, maize, soya beans and sunflower seeds has been seen (Statistics
South Africa 2019).
The article has presented the data on the GDP contraction of South Africa
which is significantly correct and supported by the data of Statistical Department of
South Africa.
