1. INTRODUCTION:
The objective of this research paper is to examine the significance of business information
systems for the firms competing in this competitive business environment. For this, paper will
analyze the business information system using “Emirates Airline” and how the system is
improving the functions for company. The research paper will evaluate its efficiencies and will
determine the supporting infrastructure used for that information system. In addition, the paper
will provide certain recommendations for improving the information system and enhancing its
efficiencies that could help Emirates Airline to have competitive edge over rivals.
2. BACKGROUND AND ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Emirates Airline is a leading and the largest airline of UAE. The company was founded in 1985
was regarded as the official airline of UAE. The company is serving in 158 destinations in
almost 85 states of the world. The company operates mixed air fleets that are wide-body aircraft.
Recently, the company owned 140 Air Bus and becomes the second largest aircraft in the world.
However, the company is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group which is owned by government
of Dubai i.e., Investment Corporation of Dubai with a total asset of about AED 188.46 billion
(Bloomberg, 2020).
Emirates Airline is headquartered in Dubai in the Emirates Group building in Al-Garhoud. The
building of Emirates Group is located on Airport Road across the site of Emirates Engineering
Centre. The history depicts that the company was established by Dubai’s royal family in 1985
due to the cut back of Gulf air’s services to Dubai. To meet the needs of travelling for people,
Emirates was founded, and the first flight was from Dubai to Karachi, Pakistan. Since its
establishment, the company has experienced a tremendous growth as it has purchased aircrafts
from largest companies in the globe i.e., Boeing and Air Bus (Cummins, 2019).
However, the mission of Emirates Airline is to provide best inflight experience to customers by
offering premium and innovative services. The company has a mission to become market leader
in the industry and develop more networks around the world. The company has a mission to
remain strongly committed to safeguard the needs of customers, assets, and staff against the
unlawful interference through continuous education, training, and reviews. The major products
and services of company includes freight and passenger transportation, first-class lounges, air

catering, ticket booking, reservation, and in-flight entertainment. The services and products
offered by Emirates attract individuals who are well-travelled and wanted to embrace the
opportunity for premium services (Emirates, 2018).
Moreover, the company has an aim to expand globally and provide services in all other regions
beyond Middle East. For this, the major objectives of Emirates Airline are to provide best quality
services to customers around the world, enhance the global brand image, remain cost effective in
its operations, to be sound financially, remain profitable and stable and provide innovative and
modern air travel services to customers worldwide (Emirates, 2018).
3. DESCRIPTION OF INDUSTRY AND COMPETITION:
3.1 Overview of Industry:
Emirates Airline works under the air transport industry of UAE which is estimated to contribute
$19.3 billion of GDP in UAE. This industry of aviation mainly regarded as the most economic
sector of UAE. The spending of tourists supports the further growth of the industry and
contributes about $28.1 billion in GDP. However, every year almost 12.9 million passengers
arrived in UAE and Asia Pacific is the largest market for airline industry of UAE, 6.2 million
passengers arrive from Europe and 6 million from Middle East. It is estimated that by 2021, GDP
by the aviation industry of UAE will reach about $22 billion which will represent 15% of the
country’s total GDP (IATA, 2020).
3.1.1 Trends and Growth in Aviation Industry of UAE:
The aviation industry of UAE is regarded as the leader in the global industry of air
transportation. The major factor that contributes to the industry’s growth is the increment in
demand for air travel as the number of travelers are increasing rapidly and it is expected that
number of travelers will increase to about 98.5 million by 2021. The growth of UAE’s aviation
industry is further harnessed by high rate at which international companies are considering the
airports of UAE as several movements of aircraft in a country which has increased rapidly in last
decade. The market trends illustrate that because of Covid-19 concerns, the corporate travels will
prefer general aviation for safer transport which will increase the potential for domestic airlines
of UAE. However, aviation industry will grow 170% and will contribute $128 billion to UAE’s
economy by 2037 (Mordor Intelligence, 2020).
