Ruishen is a 3 years 6 months old boy in Nursery 1. He is a quiet boy and
enjoys free play activities. He likes to stay alone and play alone. Both his parents are
working. His main caregiver is a home helper. Ruishen was born in China but
currently resides in a 4 room flat with his parents, near to his school. His parents
have enrolled him in a full day school but they have also opted for another
enrichment school, where Ruishen visits every evening. His helper comes and picks
him up around 2pm and after the nap time he is being sent to an enrichment school.
i. Overall analysis and evaluation of the child’s developmental domains
support by child development theories
a) Physical Development
Based on my observations, Ruishen can run, crawl and jump, which shows
that his gross motor skills are well developed. But he still need to improve to jump
from a low platform and land on both feet. In the area of fine motor skills, he still
need to improve as he finds it difficult to participate in activities involving sensory
play activities like putting beads on a string. He finds it difficult to take off all his pants

and shirt during the shower time. He cannot manage to put on all his clothes after
shower and the teacher needs to help him.
Interpretation: It is evident from the observation that Ruisen lacks two of the
important element of the developmental milestones like the gross motor skills and
the fine motor skills. Ruisen needs to ne indulged in more activities that improve
gross motor skills.
b) Intellectual Development
Ruishen has very good letter recognition skill and is able to identify most of
the letters. He can answer whatever teacher asks him. He has an excellent
pronunciation skills. He can build anything using the lego brick pieces.
Interpretation: According to the Piaget’s cognitive developmental theory, children has
been found to thinking simply, that is quite different from that of the adults (Demetriou,
Shayer & Efklides, 2016). Hence, appropriate activities needs to be chosen that
support cognitive development in the child as per his age. Lego bricks acts as
important tool in enhancing cognitive skills in child.
c) Social Development
Ruishen is a quite boy and he loved to play alone. Sometimes he plays with
Warren. He just sits down and plays or build the towel or house. He does not
express himself properly.
Interpretation: As per the observation, it is also evident that the child lacked
socializing skills, as he loves to stay and play alone. Ruisen should be encouraged
to take part mostly in group based activities, other than quiet play activities, where he
can play on his own (Akers & Jennings, 2015). According to Bandura’s social
learning theory, children learn from one another by observing, imitating and
modelling. Hence, group activities would help Ruisen to interact with other children
and develop skills of socialization. Additionally, it is also evident, that Ruisen fails to
express himself in front of his peers and the teacher. Group play activities will be
appropriate to develop his interpersonal skills and communication skills (Merrell &
Gimpel, 2014).
d) Emotional Development
Ruishen can control his emotions. He can share the toys or blocks with his
peers. He can wait for his turn to come, till the teacher calls out his name. He loves
to participate in outdoor activities as well.
