ANALYSIS OF THE PROTAGOBNISTS’ ISOLATION FROM THE OTHERS
It is important to understand the meaning of the word “Metro”. The meaning for the
word signifies the important position in the world that the literature is able to fulfil. In this
essay, “Rules of the Game” is a story written Amy Tan which tells the readers about the
struggles of a young girl and how it is this same girl who becomes a genius at chess.
Similarly, Ernest Hemmingway’s “Hills like White Elephants” is another short story which
also informs the readers about the conversation that the narrator of the story has with a
woman inside a train which ultimately convinces her to undergo abortion for her. Thus, both
the different stories have protagonists who are isolated from the others in the story.
The purpose of this essay is to describe how the characters in each of the stories
are isolated not only from the world but also from the people around them.
To analyse both the stories, it is important for the readers to understand a little of the
summary for both of the stories. In “Rules of the Game”, the readers get to know about the
life of the protagonist by seeing in the short story how she becomes a good chess player after
getting a chessboard as a gift for Christmas (Darzikokla: 8). This activity of her no doubt
causes problems from her mother’s side but the reader’s find that the protagonist of the film
becomes a very good chess player herself and even manages to beat the person who once
taught her how to play the game of chess. As stated by Fickle (88), the protagonist indeed
appears to be isolated from the world itself because she is only interested in the game of
chess that she slowly starts to forget about the social life as well as the persons who are
important to her which included her family members as well. This caused her mother to
object to her because she felt that her daughter was getting out of hand. This is exactly the
reason she advised her daughter on various things as well as being jealous of her as thought
by her daughter.
