Community-oriented policing for drug control is one of the useful methods that can be
used for the purpose of crime reduction in the society, however just as there are advantages and
disadvantages of everything the Community-oriented policing system is no exception. There are
both the pros and the cons of this system. However the task is really troublesome and time
conducing as it needs the active and the proper collaboration if the police department along with
the people of the society. Thus it can be said that the Community-oriented policing for drug
control has not been able to work in an effective manner to control the drug addiction problem in
all pervasive manner.
Braga, A. A., Welsh, B. C., & Schnell, C. (2015). Can policing disorder reduce crime? A
systematic review and meta-analysis. Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 52(4),
567-588.
This article is suggesting that there are both advantages and the disadvantages of using
this system to stop the problem of drug addiction. The issue of drug addiction is present in a
huge amount. Thus this method is tough to be implemented as there can be several problems.
The awareness is not properly well developed among all the police stations and also the common
people or the citizens of the society or the country as a whole. “For instance, in a published
debate, University of Chicago law professor Bernard Harcourt concluded that there was ‘‘no
good evidence that broken windows policing reduces serious crime,’’ while University of
Michigan public policy professor David Thacher suggested that there were some indications that
disorder policing may positively impact crime rates” (Braga, Welsh & Schnell, 2015)
Thus it is evident from the article that there are varying opinions among different
researchers and the scholars regarding the success of the implementation of this policy. Some are
of the belief that there has been some kind of reductions in the controlling of the crimes related

to drugs in some places whereas there are no significant reductions in the rate of the drugs in
many of the places. This is mainly because of the fact that people in all the parts of the society
are not well connected with the society Thus there must be efforts made fro he part of the
Government to make sure that there is a proper bond between the police and the commoners.
Cano, I., & Ribeiro, E. (2016). Old strategies and new approaches towards policing drug
markets in Rio de Janeiro. Police Practice and Research, 17(4), 364-375.
This article is talking about the different ways on which the drug markets usually operate.
However Cano and Ribeiro (2016) is of the opinion that one of the best way to stop this drug
controlling system is to de-territorialize drug markets so that there are no drug markets left in any
parts of the country. However (Hamilton et al., 2016) has argued in the similar context that this
method will not be right as it will be not be able to create a proper peace and harmonious
connection between the police forces or the governing bodies along with the common people of
the society. This will be a kind of threat as it can lead to several violent activities. De-
territorialise process of the drug markets will lead to the braking out of the riots in the localities
and might increase the rate of homicide. Thus efforts have to be made that the police men are
well versed in the techniques of carrying on this policy in a proper way so that no one is being
hurt.

& Strathdee, S. A. (2016). Implementing Mexico’s “Narcomenudeo” drug law reform: a
mixed methods assessment of early experiences among people who inject drugs. Journal of
Mixed Methods Research, 10(4), 384-401.
This article studies the gaps or the lack that is often left between the formation of the
male and the successful implementation of the same. In other words if the law are being made
the there must be proper implementation and also a proper feedback system. The drug control
system with the Community-oriented policing for drug control method needs a very good
collaboration among the policemen and the common people of the society. Thus if the
connection is no taking place properly then there will be a communication gap and neither the
police authority nor the common people of the society will be able to understand each other.
de Maillard, J., Hunold, D., Roché, S., & Oberwittler, D. (2018). Different styles of policing:
discretionary power in street controls by the public police in France and Germany. Policing
and society, 28(2), 175-188.
This article is mainly talking about the different styles or the different methods that are
used for the method if controlling the problem of drugs through this particular method. The three
important questions that must be dealt with by the police men in this connection are to what level
is the interaction or the communication between the police and the common people have to take
place. However de et al., (2018) has suggested that there is a huge lack of taking the feedback
from the policy makers or the actual victims of the drug dose. Thus there can be several instances
where the crime controlling is not done in a proper way (Godson, 2017).
Thus in such cases people will surely not be able to cooperate with the policemen and abide by
the control measures in a proper way. Thus often the policemen are not well trained in this aspect

and they keep on loitering about in the other shady places without being able to understand the
right way in which they have to create the suspicion on the people and the different ways in
which they can collaborate with people to fight against the drug addiction system.
