Introduction
This research paper makes a critical analysis of the social as well as environmental disclosures
related to BHP Limited. Closely analysing the social as well as environmental disclosures over a
period of 1983 to 1997, this research study attempts to imply the concepts of social contract
theory as well as the legitimacy theory in order to explain them.

The motivation of this research paper is to make an organisational analysis of BHP Limited.
along with analysis of the extent and type of social as well as environmental disclosures, the
research also uses the annual reports of the organisation to compare and contrast the outcomes of
social and environmental disclosures of this organisation which the same result outcomes of
others like Guthrie and Parker, who also evaluated the social as well as environmental
disclosures of the same organisation.
