Introduction
Community policing is a law enforcement philosophy that talks about the
involvement of the law enforcement officers much more in the community than what they
usually do in the course of traditional policing method (Segrave & Ratcliffe, 2017). It strives
to prevent crime even before it occurs in the society, thereby completely eradicating it from
the roots. It aims to create a safer social environment where the community shall encounter
zero or negligence amount of crime, as it proposes to make the citizens more aware and
vigilant about a crime and help prevent it themselves at times, however, without breaking the
law. The philosophy of community policing encourages the citizens to take part in law
enforcement activities for ensuring a safer community (Segrave & Ratcliffe, 2017).
Therefore, it is of vital importance that the concept and philosophy of community policing be
studied and researched for further development. Along with community policing, it is
essential to tap the other forms of policing that are discussed by modern researchers, like
public self-policing where the common citizens are vested with the responsibility to check,
manage and enforce petty offences in the community, instead of waiting for the law
enforcement officers to arrive and take charge. Therefore, the following literatures are to be
briefly overviewed to know the existing researches on this topic.
Somerville, P. (2009). Understanding community policing. Policing: An International
Journal of Police Strategies and Management, 32(2), 261-277.
Peter Somerville, the author of this journal is the Professor of Social Policy,
University of Lincoln, UK. He explored this area of research to understand how policing
could be developed in today’s community. The paper implies how government and other
policing organisations might employ advanced policing techniques and strategies in future.

The paper strives to provide a logical summary about the role of policing, community
policing in particular. It also talks about self-policing practices that people could adopt,
thereby giving opportunity to a new approach of building advanced policing organisations. A
qualitative secondary research has been carried out by the author for this paper, as seen from
the bibliography, for the author has extensively referred to a good number of books, journal
articles and newsletters. The paper, therefore, talks about public self-policing along with the
concept of street-level bureaucracy.
Community policing has been widely discussed in this paper along with the concepts
of public self-policing, street-level bureaucracy, thereby building the concept of advanced
policing organisations for future.
Abah, N. C. (2019). POLICING THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY THROUGH THE
COMMUNITY POLICING STRATEGY. African Psychologist: An International
Journal of Psychology and Allied Profession, 9(1).
The author of the paper is Nobert Chijioke Abah, a professor at the Department of
Political Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The purpose of this writing this paper
was to discuss the recommendation of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies
research group that spoke for community policing in the context to the helplessness of the
police in maintaining law and order in Nigeria. This paper is expected to contribute towards
researches on policing, thereby helping to establish the effectiveness of police authority in
terms of protecting Nigerian community. The paper has been constructed with the help of
descriptive analysis of information acquired through desk survey. The paper concludes by
suggesting community policing as an alternative policing method.
