Introduction
Ethics in the leadership enable the organization to realize its identity in relation to
corporate responsibilities (Price, 2018). An ethical leader is able to follow the instincts. This aids
to distinguish acceptable from unacceptable ways to relate with others in the society. Ethical
deeds are both morally and legally right (Robinson, 2017). They acts like checklists to set the
good behaviors from the wrong behaviors. Ethical standards serve to guide in decisions making
in the companies. In most cases companies have found themselves in the dilemmas between
choosing on following the ethical standard or the company’s interests (Hartnell, 2017). This
assessment aims at describing an ethical leader of choice touching on the entitled traits,
perception of the scene and analysis of the ethical lens.

Todd carpenter is an ethical leader of interest in this paper. Todd is the managing director
at the Colorado Children’s hospital. Todd’s main focus is on pediatric intensive care unit. It is his
corporate responsibility to ensure everything in the hospital is working in the right order. Todd
holds a very critical position of ensuring the hospital is managed effectively. It is also his
responsibility to balance the work force, resources, and ensure children at the hospital is attended
with utmost care. Todd encounter difficult situations where he has to decide on whether to attend
to patients with critical conditions or attend the board meetings where important issues

handle the staffs and patients at the hospital. Employees are treated equally without any fear or
favor. Every employee before him is a co-worker and is subjected to equal reward or
punishments when the need for such actions arise. The traits have increased the working
relationship through professional handling of the matters. All staffs have developed trust in him
and this has assisted in the management of the hospital. Todd execute roles with great care
according to the needs and urgencies. He is driven by time and he is always on toes to save lives
at the Hospital. Patients who are in critical conditions are attended by fair selection of team of
staffs. Every staff views on the condition is taken on account without any discrimination.
The second and most important trait of Todd is focus in the team building. As it has been
mentioned in the previous paragraphs, Todd is a very good team player. He provide a conducive
environment to other staffs whenever they are working together to attain a certain pediatric goal.
He does not discriminate staffs on the basis of experience or expertise. Everyone in the team is
given equal and respectable chance to contribute on the project on hand. Junior staffs are
encouraged to develop their careers by working diligently and observation of the senior staffs.
As a manager, Todd has been able to show the world how an ethical leader should behave
in an organization. He has been able to achieve most rewards for exemplary performances in the
hospital. Good performance is evident through the number of patients are assisted in the hospital.

Analysis of the Dilemma
Scenario in this course can be analyzed in the consequentialist and deontological points
of view. Consequentialist philosophy tend to focus on the result of an action (Sorensen, 2017).
This perspective emphasis on choosing the actions with more good consequences (Sosik, 2018).
Individual with this perspective evaluate the consequences that organization will suffer if
information about the artificial knee joint reach the public. These kind of people ask themselves
questions like, who will benefit more from the results of my actions? The public or the hospital?
The major hindrance in this perspective is determination of the stakeholders to benefit on the
actions.
Consequentialists settle on the sides where good consequences are likely to be more. A
consequentialist may decide to expose the hospital. That is if the person consider it having more
good consequences. The consequences maybe job security and reputation of the hospital to the
public.
Deontological perspective is guided by the focus on doing what is morally right as per the
guidelines of the ethical principles and rules or laws (Walumbwa, 2017). In this scenario, one
will focus on the wellbeing of the patients. This will cover truth and honest. Avoiding to disclose
the side effects of an artificial knee joint is totally unethical. This should be discouraged in all
means possible. The other perspective of this philosophy is the observance of guidelines as per
the signed agreements. This holds individuals with this perspective on a dilemma (Northouse,
2018). People with this perspective are strictly guided by their values and moral. Analyzing the
information effectively help in arriving at the thought decision concerning ethical value and
organization goals (Lind, 2017)

Cognitive Moral Development
Preconventional, conventional and post conventional are the three moral reasoning that
differ in different stages (Kohlberg, 2017). People at the Preconventional stage of moral
development tend to focus on what will happen to themselves as the consequences of their
actions. They are self-centered and in most cases they think about themselves and the
consequences they are likely to suffer (Bartnik, 2018). They ask questions about what will
happen if they disclose the information to the public. Am I going to be fired for disclosing the
information about the artificial knee joint to the public? Will I be promoted for keeping the
information from the public or what benefits am I going to get for disclosing information? This
level is very dangerous because it does not consider the bigger picture of the society at large
rather than personal consequences (Savulescu, 2017).
Individual in the convectional stage do not strictly consider themselves. They are guided
by the fulfilment of the duties entitled to their positions (Huang, 2017). They observe the legal
course in making their decisions on daily matters. They ask themselves question like; what is it
required of me by the law? What will happen if I go against the signed agreement? Is it my role
to disclose the information to the public?
Lastly, Post-conventional stage is guided on the ethics and moral principle in
performance of the overall responsibilities (Dobel, 2017). People in this stage of moral reasoning
do what is morally and ethically right. In this case they will consider keeping the information
about the lethal effects of the joint from the public unethical. They will be at ease in disclosing
this information to the public no matter the consequences attracted to their action. Question at
this stage, what action provide fairness and justice to everyone?

Post-conventional cognitive moral development dominate in this scenario. According to
me the best action for justification in the society is to disclose the information to the public. This
action is likely to save society from the effects associated to artificial knee joint. This is a bold
decision and it is likely to expose me into problems like losing the job or benefits from the
organization. The hospital will suffer loss and reputation when this information is known to the
public. In reaction over these consequences, the hospital is going to punish through firing.
Ethical Lens Inventory.
My preferred lens is Responsible lens. I value having the right to choose how to sensibly
live into my values and principles even if people don’t value my perspectives. I strongly believe
this is true. I stand with the truth even when people don’t believe in what I am standing for. My
Lens represents deontology theory. My primary value indicates how I prioritize between
rationality and sensibility as well as an autonomy and equality. This lens guide on how to
responsibly consider my ethical principle effectively. I rarely consider the views and
perspectives of others at the working environment and society at large. In respect to the lens I
value justice, honest and equality to all no matter the perspectives of others. This is guided by
deontological perspective where the own principle is considered in the decision making along the
cause and effects (Chung, 2017).
I have made a decision to apply my ethical lens to the way I relate with people. I will
treat people in school and in the place of work with dignity and respect. I will be responsible to
myself and to the people around me. I will value others perspectives and honor their views
regardless of the ethics they stand for. I will also stand for truth and justice for everything and
everyone I meet. I will evaluate severely the feelings of others so that I can make relevant
