INTRODUCTION
Counselling is the way of development in which a experienced and well knowledgeable
person which is called a counsellor assist learners or client to mitigate the issues which they are
facing and achieve their specific goal (Cavallaro & et al., (2020)). It is essential that a counsellor
and client will have good relationship because a effective trust between them will help them to
share the issues and solution with each other. Counsellor guides the client about their
performance and how they can attain greater skill and behaviour to achieve success. This report
is fully depends upon given case study. The following report covers key principles and goals of
the approach in working with Danni, rationale to support choice of counselling approach in terms
of their application to working with children and families. The following report also covers
rationales explaining why the suggested approach may be helpful and suggestion of two
techniques or interventions from the approach that you would use with Danni to facilitate
change.

The key principles and goals of the approach in working with Danni
In context of the case study, it is better to use Humanistic Approach to Counselling
which is considered as one of the most powerful counselling approach. This approach of
counselling assumes that everyone has the capacity to grow psychologically and emotionally
toward the goal of self-actualization (Approaches to Counselling, 2022). According to this
approach, problems are not caused by life events but they are caused by how we see them and
how we reach them. This further help the client to understand how negative response to life
events can lead to psychological discomfort (Supriyanto & et al., (2020)). In context of case
study, this approach will help the Danni to analyse how her negative and rude behaviour can
impact her upcoming life and relationship with her family. This approach will focus on both
positive and negative character and behaviour of the client.
Key principles of counselling in working with Danni-
 Principle of acceptance- A counsellor must accept the client with his/her physical
appearance, his/her social or cultural conditions and many others. A counsellor must
accept his client in any ways. In context of case study, the counsellor who is appointed to
Danni must be accept her behaviour and attitude.

 Principle of communication- The communication can be verbal or non-verbal in
counselling session. There should be open communication between client and counsellor.
The client is required to share his/her issue openly and the counsellor will suggest the
alternatives of solution.
 Principle of empathy- The counsellor should avoid showing sympathy to the client
(Principles of Counselling, 2022).
 Principle of non-judge mental attitude- The counsellor is not supposed to comment
negative upon client's complaint. In context of case study, counsellor is not supposed to
say anything wrong about the Danni's current behaviour. Instead of this, he/she can tell to
Danni that what issue she may face in future if she did not adopt change in her behaviour.
 Principle of confidentiality- It is essential for the counsellor to keep the clients name
and issue secret and secure. This will help them to build good relationship with each
other and gain high trust of client.
 Principle of individuality- It is essential for counsellor to treat his/her client as unique
and special as well as respect their issue (All Habsy & et al.. (2019)). Principle of non- emotional involvement- The counsellor is required to avoid to get
emotionally involved with client.
Goals of the approach in working with Danni-
 The main goal of this approach in case of Danni is to help her to analyse how her current
behaviour and attitude will affect her upcoming life and mental health.
 Another important goal of this approach is to make Danni aware about her positive and
negative behaviour toward others.
 This approach will also help Danni to accept the trust of her mother's death and move on
in her life with full positivity.
The rationale to support your choice of counselling approach in terms of their application to
working with children and families
The main reason for choosing Humanistic Approach of counselling is its application and
its benefits. There are various benefits of using this counselling approach to manage any issue
especially in case of Danni. The counsellor is supposed to motivate the clients here and make
them understand that how they can face their issues effectively. Here, counsellors main approach
is to make their clients understand that the problems are not caused by life events themselves but

how a individual experience them matters. In case of Danni, the counsellor can make her
understand that her mother's death is natural and she is supposed to accept that and try to
overcome. If she need time, then she must invest to take more time but she have to become
extrovert and did not allow herself for isolation stage (Nicholas, & Goodyear (2021)). This
counselling approach also help Danni to analyse if she continues the same behaviour then she
can face many other problems in her life like others will not communicate with her or others will
become uninteresting to talk to her any more. In context of Danni's family members, the
counsellor is supposed to make them understand that Danni just lost that women whom she loved
a lot. Hence, she need special care and polite behaviour from her family to overcome her
mother's death. This counselling approach will not only assist Danni for changing her behaviour
for her benefit but this approach will also help her family members to analyse how they must
treat with Danni. The counsellor may communicate with Danni's family members to analyse why
Danni is not cooperating with them and what they think about Danni.
Rationales explaining why the suggested approach may be helpful for them
The Humanistic approach of counselling is helpful for Danni and her family to overcome the
situation in various ways and few of the reasons are mentioned below-
 To analyse the positive and negative impacts of the Danni behaviour- This Approach
of counselling will help the Danni and her family to analyse that if she continues the
same behaviour than what are the negative outcome which she may face in her future.
Giving real life examples is beneficial here. This approach basically work to analyse the
behaviour and influencing factors for the behaviour of clients (Behr, Aich, &
Scheurenbrand (2020)). Hence, this approach will help the Danni's family to analyse the
ways they can influence her to act positively with them.
 Essential for motivation of individual- This will help Danni to get motivated that she
can live happily for her rest of the life. This approach will further help Danni to highlight
her strengths and also help her to analyse that if she act in a same manner like she is
acting recently then her strengths can be converted into her weakness which is harmful
for her future. Hence, This approach of counselling will help Danni to get motivated and
make her focused upon her future.
 Maintain the mental health of Danni- In context of case study, Danni is emotional and
hurt due to her mother's death and this causes her behaviour and mental state in negative

manner. Hence, while applying humanistic approach of counselling can help Danni to
analyse that her recent behaviour is not only hurting others but she is hurting herself and
her mental health. Therefore, maintaining the mental health of Danni can be done through
the chosen approach of counselling.
 Helps in management of emotions- This counselling approach is helpful for Danni to
understand and learn the way she can manage and control her emotions in different
situations which is not only beneficial for present time but this would be beneficial for
her upcoming professional life. She would face different situations in her professional life
and humanistic approach of counselling will help her to become motivated to manage her
emotions and achieve the success of life.
Suggestion of two techniques or interventions from the approach that you would use with Danni
to facilitate change
The two main techniques which can be adopted to solve the issue given in case study are
mentioned below-
 The counsellor must communicate to the family members of Danni and especially her
father to make them understand the situation of Danni and how she feel after the death of
her mother. It is essential to make them clear that Danni has special attachment with her
mother and after her death she feel alone. Hence, the family members are supposed to
ignore few of her negative attitude and try to spend good time with her. Danni's step
mother must try to cooperate with Danni and her father Jack must organise few family
trip for making the Danni's mood refresh. A effective and enjoyable family trip will help
the Danni to understand that her new family is cooperative and she can adjust to the
family easily. Such kind of positive behaviour of Danni's family toward Danni will help
her to understand that her new family will love her and take care of her in the same
manner as her mother does. Her father is supposed to motivate her and help her to
overcome the death of her mother.
 It is also suggested that the counsellor will help Danni to overcome the situation by
bringing her focus toward her upcoming life. Here, the counsellor is required to make
Danni understand that how her current behaviour and attitude will damage her upcoming
life and especially her professional career. Here, the counsellor will not only focus on her
negative behaviour or weakness but the counsellor will motivate her by highlighting her

strengths and positive behaviour as well as her achievements to make her understand that
she can overcome the situation easily. Highlighting the achievements and her strengths
will help her to analyse her will power and motivate her effectively. Secondly, it is also
helpful if the counsellor will tell his/her or someone else story which is similar to Danni's
current situation. The counsellor will also tell the ways by which they manage the similar
situation as Danni has and what benefits they gained to overcome the situation. Hence,
this will help Danni to analyse various kinds of alternatives to restart her joyful life again
achieve her life goals. The counsellor must ask her plans and goals which she decided to
achieve in her future. Then the counsellor must make her clear that if she continues to
react everything in negative manner than she can face many issues to achieve her life
goals.
Conclusion
From the above information it is concluded that counselling is helpful for keeping the
clients motivated and help them to mitigate the issues which they are facing in their life.
Counselling can bring positive change within the behaviour and attitude of individual. There are
many types of approaches available in counselling one of them is Humanistic approach of
counselling which work directly to change the behaviour and attitude of an individual to
overcome the specific issue which they are facing. This approach can help an individual to
analyse their strengths and weakness appropriately. This approach will further highlight that the
individual face problems due to their reaction toward any situation or any event of life. There are
various principles of counselling like principle of acceptance, principle of confidentiality,
principle of individuality and many others. The main aim of counselling is to motivate the client
that he/she are capable to solve their own issues effectively. Hence, counselling make the clients
self sufficient and self- motivated to face any situation in life.
