1APPROACHES
The concept of nursing bears the basic idea of voluntary service with selfness. Taking
utmost care of an ailing patient is the utmost motto of nursing. The incident that shook the nation
entirely occurred in 2015, when a geriatric patient lost her life due to the irresponsible act of a
nurse (Bibby,2019). This horrible instance of lack of commitment to one’s work made the
Australian government to redraft the code of conduct. It can be said that this sort of
irresponsibility should be dealt with stringent way (eprints.qut.edu.au, 2019). The aim of this
essay is to focus on how the aspirant nurses should opt for available evidences for safe and
effective practice, and how these will help them to develop practice eventually leading to a more
efficient professional outlook.
The said incident occurred on January 30, when Mrs. Anderson a geriatric patient was
dozed with wrong medicine, which eventually led to her death. The nurse, Mrs Mavis Lopez,
who was associated with this kind of heinous incident was subsequently booked for trial. Mrs
Lopez, without consulting to anybody crushed three medicines and pushed the mixture through
the IV cannula that was inserted into her right arm. Undoubtedly this can be said that Mrs Lopez,
the nurse on duty is solely responsible for this incident. As a geriatric patient, it was getting
impossible for Mrs. Anderson to swallow anything. Mrs. Lopez, decided to administer the
mixture of three oral medicines intravenously (Bibby,2019). This decision was against the
standard norms, and thus led to the debacle (Nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au.,2019). Without
consulting a senior authority, this act of sheer irresponsibility led to the death of Mrs. Anderson.
Though it can be stated from the medical report than Mrs Anderson was in a deplorable
condition, still the roll of irresponsibility cannot be ruled out.

2APPROACHES
It can be easily stated from the incident that the sudden death of Mrs. Anderson due to the
negligence of proper medical guidance has led to a debacle. What can be deduced from the
aforementioned incident is that, the consequences of this incident have some way or the other
created an impact on both the concerned authority and the people of Australia (Ahpra.gov.au.,
2019). The concerned nurse who has been booked for this sheer act of negligence has been going
through stringent legal procedure. Though the case proceeding is going on, still the impact of this
case has left an adverse impression on the Australian people. Medical negligence is the least
expected reason behind a death in Australia. As a developed country Australian government has
strict medical regulations which look after the betterment of the medical services in the country.
But after the debacle that took place in Sydney, left the country in dilemma and indecision
whether to opt for the government hospital or a private one.
According to the regulations set by the NMBA there are four major domains (Leadership,
skills, training and ethics) where improvisation can be implied (Nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au.,
2019). According to the guidelines by NMBA a nurse should go through all the necessary steps
before taking up this profession. A profound knowledge on human physiology and health
science should be the first and foremost criteria for this promotion. A proper in depth plan should
be drawn. The aspirant nurses should strictly abide by the regulations set up by NMBA
(Nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au, 2019). The charter states that concrete critical analysis of a said
situation should be opted as a guideline prior to the diagnosis. The proper assessment of a
medical report should be dealt with utmost care. A proper psychological as well as physical
assessment of a patient should be carried out. The idea of nursing is to serve the patients with

care and affection, so before taking a leap forward the aspirants should understand the
philosophy of nursing (Matua,2015). A proper scientific training that consists of psychological,
physical health of a human should be opted for. The guideline also states that often nursing is a
collaborative process, so it means that besides being trained individually, a nurse should help
others to participate in the process. This guidance eventually will lead to leadership goals
(Hutchinson & Jackson,2013). The collective effort to treat a patient often plays a pivotal role in
the treatment process. More over getting acquainted to the medicinal science with practical
experience will lead to accurate treating measures. Incidents like this has left a negative impact,
but still it can be stated that under a proper medical guideline with experienced medical team will
change the scenario. First of all an effective and efficient communicative system should be set up
to collect the relevant data. This database will help the aspirant nurse to understand the exact
situation, and eventually from the outcome the nurses will be able to experience and manage
situations at the time of crisis. Their experience will accounted for further development in the
field, eventually leading to more efficient outcome.
The incident has left a serious impact on me. As a citizen of this country I am concerned
about the betterment of my people. Whenever I am thinking about this incident, it is popping up
on my mind that this same thing can happen to my family also. I often think had my mother been
there, what would have been my situation. It is quite obvious to say that whatever role the nurse
played in the said incident cannot be justified. The nurse with her lack of responsibility has failed
to deliver the noble service. It was because of her overt and impetuous decision a patient lost her
life. Though the incident was an unintentional one, still the gravity of the incident cannot be
trivialized. The convicted nurse who committed this incident should be prosecuted in a drastic

but humane way so that the trial would later become an example for the defaulters (White et
al.,2014).
The nurse could have consulted to a senior colleague who would have helped her, but
without taking any prior measures she took the decision of her own. It can be assumed that
further the consequences of this incident will refrain the nursing community from committing an
irresponsible act.
It can be concluded from the above intricate study that the incident has left the country in
shock. Obviously it can be said that a single incident cannot justify the whole nursing community
but still this act of sheer negligence should be dealt with judicial proceedings. As been said
earlier the idea of nursing consists of voluntary service to the ailing patient. This can be
concluded from the above incident that the Australian government will take a step to upgrade
their idea of medical service. It can be assumed that this incident has left an adverse impact on
the people of Australia. Still the various aspects of nursing training assure us not to lose hope.
The methodical scientific process is the only way to deal with complex diseases, so the steps
taken by the Australian government is appropriate.
