Architectural Element 3IntroductionJyvaskyla university was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1950 as an entry in a planning design competition for Jyvaskyla institute of Pedagogics. The location of the new university was an old teachers college whose site was mainly a depression adjacent to a ridge full of pine trees. Aalto designed the university as separate buildings that form a U pattern round a sports field and circulation paths that are lined with trees as shown in Figure3 below. The buildings only have pedestrian access and each building has two entrances that serve as pathways from the public city to the more private education spaces [ CITATION Mal83 \l 1033 ]. Fig. 1. The concert and meeting hall allow the university tobe integrated in the city’s cultural life.

Architectural Element 6Symbolism of Jyvaskyla UniversityJyvaskyla university is one of the pioneer buildings in awakening Finnish heritage and culture, away from the Russian and Swedish culture that it was historically accustomed to. It is a symbol to the reawakening of the Finnish culture and embracing it as a cultural identityIt was also designed by a local architect, Aalto, who was later known as the father of Finnish architecture. Aalto designed the university with respect to its institutional and natural environment. All the materials used for construction were locally sourced; interior staircases have mahogany balustrades that illustrate the pine forest context it was in, red brick that was a common trademark for Aalto that provides contrast with the soft green landscape [ CITATION Gor94 \l 1033 ].Neighbourhood contextJyvaskyla is a Finnish city that is located at the confluence of three major watercourses, and surrounded by ridges and forests in the central district of Finland. It is the seventh largest city in Finland as shown in Figure 6 below. Jyvaskyla city is renown as the city of education, having being the home of some of the best education institutions in Finland such as University ofJyvaskyla and the JAMK University of Applied Sciences refer to Figure 5 below.
