SECTION 1.0Families of Engineering material is subdivided into 6-materials: Ceramics, Elastomers,Glasses, Metals, Polymers and Hybrids. They might have similarity in the application, propertiesand process (Ashby and Cebon, 1993). Metals are strong, having high strength, tensile, moduli, higher mechanical properties, ductile and good conductor of heat and electricity. However, theyare prey to fatigue and are least immune to corrosion. Ceramics and glasses are brittle in naturebut have high moduli, have higher strength and highly resistance to corrosion. Polymers are thematerials that have low moduli, elastic, tough and is resistant to corrosion. Elastomers are similarto polymers and are combination of its long chain. They have similar properties of polymers, with addition of higher elasticity. Hybrid are integrated sandwich like materials. They can haveany properties depending on the materials combined. 1
