Assessment 1A: Critical Review Report
Executive summary of the report:
This report aims to achieve an understanding of risks mitigation strategies adopted by construction
companies to preserve human life working at a continuous risk in constructional facilities. Challenges
faced and effective ways to mitigate those challenges are devised with the help of risk assessment
strategies to successfully conduct this process.
Proposed research topic : Risks Mitigation and Challenges in Construction Projects
Summary of the main identified scholarly article relevant to the topic:
[1] Article citation
Aminbakhsh, S., Gunduz, M. and Sonmez, R., 2013. Safety risk assessment using analytic hierarchy
process (AHP) during planning and budgeting of construction projects. Journal of safety research, 46,
pp.99-105.
A. Provide the annotation
[2] Introduction- This research paper by Aminbakhsh, Gunduz and Sonmez (2013), works on
identifying issues pertaining to risk mitigation and practical significance of processes involved to
analyze relevant challenges concomitant with risk management in construction projects. Cost
involved in safety measures incur direct loss for the companies, where appropriate risk management
strategies are not adopted.
[3] Aims, research questions & Research Methods- Aminbakhsh, Gunduz and Sonmez (2013), for
this article adopted Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), for cost and safety measurements in relation
with stakeholders associated with the project. Methodologies include Cost of Safety Model (COS),
detailed theoretical analysis of hierarchy process as well as accidental and safety hazard nullification
and countering procedures.
[4] Scope-This research paper scope is related to numerical methodologies and paradigms involved in
risk mitigation, where effects of injuries, accidents occurring in a constructional project to identify
and reduce hazards involved in the process. Analytical Hierarchy process is applied in geometric
measurements to have a detailed idea regarding involvement of associated challenges.
[5] Usefulness [to a particular topic]- The topic selected for conducting Assignment 1, from this
article by Aminbakhsh, Gunduz and Sonmez (2013), is directly related to challenges involved in
reduction of risks related to projects in construction. Clear concept of analyzing hierarchical process
provides idea regarding use of safety measures to substantially reduce concerns concerning to
stakeholders welfare.
[6] Limitations- This research by Aminbakhsh, Gunduz and Sonmez (2013),has limitations in
relation with location, because risk mitigation strategies involved in a project has local regulations
and legal processes involved with projects. Real life scenarios used for describing has been referred

from examples taken online, excluding direct association with the process, which could have helped
in better understanding of identified risks and problems.
[7] Conclusions- This article has analyzed hazards and challenges with analytical processes, for both
physical as well as chemical hazards. Certain factors were used to provide policy makers a detailed
synopsis of potential risks associated with a project. Personnel involved in the procedure to manage
costs, safety policy and risk mitigation processes in project management policies.
[8] Reflection- This article provides a detailed idea regarding the risks and challenges associated with
construction project. Damage incurred to personnel due to incomplete risk assessment strategies is
harmful to the organization as a whole. Initial investment on risk mitigation provides easier and
effective risk management methods, which are beneficial to the organization financially.
B. Evaluate the credibility of the article
This research paper is an accepted and reviewed, freely accessible journal used by juggernauts in
the construction industry to successfully analyse and implement risk mitigation strategies.
C. Explain how did you locate and download the article
The article is found using keywords on Google Scholar for relevant article in association with the
topic where risk mitigation and challenges were used as keywords.

A. Evaluate the credibility of the article
This research paper is used as a reviewed journal. Cited by relevant scholars and used as a
reference by authors, due to free availability for analysing risk assessment and mitigation
strategies.
