Background/Overview
As a youth worker, it is a vital part of your role to understand how to implement work
health and safety (WHS) practices. These practices protect your own health and
wellbeing and the wellbeing of the young people you support. Good work health and
safety practices are also an important part of meeting legal and ethical compliance
requirements in services.
Brief
In completing this assessment, you will demonstrate that you understand:
 the purpose of WHS policies and procedures, and how these fit into a legislative
and regulatory framework
 how to identify and record potential hazards in working environments
 how to implement policies and procedures for safe workplace practices
 how to follow standard infection precautions to prevent the spread of infections

Case study
During your last shift at Wings, a residential out of home care unit there was a behavioural
escalation with the young person Joshua where he smashed several glass cups on the
kitchen floor as well as throwing all the contents of the fridge on various walls in the house.
Joshua threatened to cut himself with the broken glass. Joshua escalated after he was told
there was no petty cash to go to McDonalds and you didn’t accept Joshua’s demand to pay
out of your own money. Joshua said that another worker had paid for Joshua out of his own
money in the past.
Joshua has now retreated to his room and is watching a DVD. Joshua is the only young
person in the unit at this time.
As you are assessing the hazards, Joshua approaches you in the kitchen and begins to
disclose new information about his past, about how his parents treated him. Joshua has
asked that you keep this information private.
Short Answers
Activity 1: List the tasks you would prioritise immediately in relation to your duty of care and
explain your rationale for each priority. (150 – 200 words)
Answer
[ In context to this situation of behavioral changes and escalation as a youth care taker my
duty priorities are observe and report this mental health situation to the healthcare workers in
order to determine the Immediate action for the prevention of further deterioration
(Sorochinski & Salfati, (2018). I will work on the risk assessment in order to prevent further
hazard, immediate escalate care, communication and education] each task is essential due
to its important in patient mental health care and management such as observation and
reporting is important for developing immediate action and risk management is important in
context to prevention of this issues, communication helps to understand the patient and
education helps to manage this behaviour and prevent risk (Grant, (2019). Immediate
escalate care is important in order to prevent the self harm of patient.
Activity 2: Describe at least one situation, from this case study, or in another youth work

[ In this case the situation at which that is important to use infection control procedures is
situation at which Joshua threatened to cut himself with the broken glass. On that place that
is important to use the infection control procedures in order to prevent the Joshua infections

in the chances of cut or injury. As according to the legislative framework of the work health
and safety that is important to make sure that every participants and people of the workplace
should be protected from any risk and hazard of the infection or injury. Such as in case of
the cut or injury hand hygiene, cleaning of the wound, protection against airborne infection,
monitoring of the HVAC, dressing of the wounds with antibiotic ointment and sterile pad. In
case of Joshua another situation of the infection control is cleaning of the food items, fridge
and walls. As Joshua thrown all the contents of the fridge on various walls which can cause
the growth of microbes and chances of infections, so in that case that is important to clean
all leaving area (Miller & Palenik, (2018). ]

Activity 4: Describe three ways in which Joshua’s behavioural escalation incident could
have been prevented. (150 - 200 words)
Answer
[Joshua escalated due to lack of money to go to McDonalds and he didn't get support to
complete his wise, due to which he became angry and aggressive which lead to the risk of
self and other harm. That situation of Joshua’s behavioral escalation could prevented, if he
got supported with the best options and effective communication, through which another
choice and option is can be selected and accomplish for Joshua’s satisfaction. As in context
to the management of patient mental health and behavior communication and emotional
support is very important which helps to manage the distress and adverse behavior
(Copeland & Henry, (2017). Through effective communication youth worker can give
attention and importance to the individual and help them to overcome the mental issues by
making the different choice ans alternatives. ]

requirements in services, according to which information of the each members of the
organizations and client should keep confidential and not disclose to the others until, that
will become very essential to share. I will not disclose that to any one but in situation like
behavioral escalation in residential or home care place, that become important to share
patine condition and problems with health care workers, with the help of which they can
make the right care plan and choice of the actions which can be effective and helpful for the
Joshua mental health (Conlon, Raeburn & Wand, (2019). Individual history and life
experience information is important in the patient care plan and treatment selection, that is
very important part of the health care practices to collect the patient history. So the Joshua
disclosed formation about how his parents treated him when he was a young child is
important information which should be provided to the health care professional and I will
provide it to them.
