Instructions:

One and have received feedback from your trainer.
The assessment consists of an activity and a project based on a scenario.
This assessment should take you approximately 10 to 12 hours including reviewing
your reading and the Lynda.com videos. However this timing is only an estimate.
The actual time it takes you to complete the work will depend upon your previous
experience. You have two weeks to complete the assessment.

Consider the following email sent from Tony Habib to his staff at Zenith
Automotive Parts and answer the questions below.
To: Customer Service Team
From: Tony Habib, Service Manager
Subject: Smoking in the courtyard
Hi Guys and Girls
It has come to my attention that some of you have been smoking in the courtyard. Each and
every one of us is responsible for upholding the law about smoking within four metres of the
building – and that means the courtyard is a non-smoking area.
First and foremost, as of now, anyone caught smoking in the courtyard will be asked to write
a “Please explain” – and the fact that you can’t read the sign which says “This is a non-
smoking area” will not be considered an excuse.
Secondly, the company has decided to offer Quit Smoking classes to anyone of you who
wants to take it up. They have even offered to provide some anti-smoking aids like nicotine
chewing gum and patches to help out. Just ask Jan in HR and she will give you the details.
I hope I don’t have to bring this up again or a few heads are likely to roll.

conventions) as appropriate.
3. Assume that you are aware that Anne, a team member for whom
you are responsible, is one of the smokers who have been smoking
in the courtyard. You suspect she also smokes in the women’s
toilets. This is also prohibited as well as being offensive to you and
the other women on your team. Write a script OR record a short
audiotape of how you would approach Anne about this matter.
Your script should be in keeping with best practice in
communication and providing feedback.

Scenario
Café Take-Away is part of a chain of five restaurants across the city. You
have been the manageress of Café Take-Away in an outer Sydney suburb for
nearly five years and you have built up a loyal team of two part-timers and a
casual who have been with you since the beginning.
You have been aware that the lease is coming up for renewal and the owners
of the chain have been attempting to negotiate better terms since the café,
situated in an industrial estate, is only marginal and not near as profitable as
the cafes closer to the city centre.
