Case Study 6: Jade Lee
Jade Lee, an immigrant, has been recently hired by Cascade Peak School
as a casual education support worker. Jade can understand English but
is having a difficulty speaking the language. She can understand and
follow instructions from her supervising teacher, but does not usually
ask questions when she needs clarifications with something. She thinks
that she will only embarrass herself if she talks. She is very shy and
tends to be quiet, especially during breaks when all other staff members
are interacting with each other. She thinks that her co-workers are very
aggressive when they talk, and she wants to avoid being discriminated
or bullied at work.
Whenever another staff would
ask a favour from her, she
would be hesitant, but agrees
anyway. Some of her co-
workers say that Jade just
wants to please everyone
that’s why she can’t say ‘no’.
The supervising teacher who
has been observing and
hearing reports about Jade
thinks that this attitude might
cause problems in the future if
she is considered for the full-time role.
Jade has shared with you about her experiences in the workplace. She
asks for your help so she can become at ease in school.
Task
Your task is to resolve the occurring issues in the workplace that
concerns diversity. Promote understanding among your co-workers by
sending an email containing the following:
At least three (3) issues from the scenario that may cause/is
causing communication misunderstandings or difficulties in the
workplace.
At least three (3) impacts of social and cultural diversity in the
workplace scenario

Subject: To address the issue of diverity in the workplace
Message:
Sir,
I am Jade Lee a teacher in or school who has been facing some issues
related to discrimination at the workplace. I want to explain you about that
the different types of issues that i am facing. As i do not speak the same
language as often as my other collgues i have been facing the issues of the
language mismatch which is a great concern. Due to the understanding
lack of actual understanding between me and the other teacher we are
constanly having issues in communiation. Being an outsider i have been
facing issues in developing work relations with my colleagues. This is the
reason that other have started making assumptions about me which are
not true. It can be said that the impact of the soial and cultural diversity in
the organization is the factor that has become the factor due to which the
buisness is being affected. I want to socialize with other butdue to these
differences that i am having at the moment with other i have not been able
to achieve such desires. From my research I have been able to indentify
the ways in which I can resolve this issue of the diversity in the workplace.
Conduction of a diveristy training would be an effective way of
overcomming the issues that are being faced by the teachers of this
workplace. It has been found that due to the increased level of diversity in
the work place the productivity has improved but in order to be able to
increase the awareness in the workers related to the diveristy it is going to
be very important to be able to develop the understanding of how to
manage the experiences in the workplace. Celebration of the differences
that are present in the employees of the workplace is considered to be a
key strategy that allows the teachers to be able to work freely and also
make them learn about the importance of the work related experiences.
Diveristy in in the workplace is a very important to keep the culture of the
organization intact. This is the reason for which proper actions are needed
to be taken from the higher authority of the school for being able to fulfill
the requirements whicha re necessary.
