Smart Liveable Cities
The discussion is focused on introducing the Smart Liveable Cities (SLC) concept. To do so,
this paper will explore real-life cases of smart liveable cities in order to explore how such
smart cities can be further transitioned for a sustainable future. In this way, the real-time
example of smart cities in Australia which has been chosen here is the City of Adelaide (CA)
(Invest Adelaide, 2019). Subsequently, it is going to explore the idea of ‘Smart Liveable
Cities’ (SLC) with the help of CA. With the help of important examples in the chosen
Australian city, EIAM projects, plans, policies, activities, as well as other smart city
initiatives will be explained and explored related to the SLC (Hojer & Wangel, 2015).
For CA, it can be easily said that the city is purposefully designed for the smart people and
smart world. Based on (Invest Adelaide, 2019), It is being observed that CA is completely on
track of becoming one of leading smartest cities in the world. CA is an internationally
connected as well as opportunity-rich economy of modern era. The creators of smart nations
in Australia are actually creating an ecosystem of citizen-driven and open innovation, sharing
and building resources as well as services (Kramers et al., 2016). The city is being made
smart in order to generate novel standards in the way community people live, work, do
business and learns as well.
From the technology perspective, the City of Adelaide is embedding 21st-century digital
technologies into its core infrastructure for effectively improving the integration and
functionality of the whole city and economy as well (Bakici et al., 2013). In addition to that,
in CA sensors’ network support smart-city initiates and projects which ultimately allow
people to better manage daily functions like carbon emissions, energy consumption and most
importantly the movement of people.
Moreover, the chosen smart city is doing well in areas such as innovation, education, and
research. In this context, it is worth knowing that CA owns three world-class research
universities, along with an entrepreneurial ecosystem (Deakin, 2013). The research and
innovation of CA are actually sparking with a focus and potential on future industries. Apart
from this, excellence in some important technological fields like med-tech, advanced
manufacturing, AI, creative industries, advanced data analytics, and cyber-security are
helping the city to become smarter day-by-day (Smart Nation and Digital Government
Office, 2018).
