1REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT
While discussing the application and usage of active micro skills while
communicating with the patient, it should be mentioned that active micro skills help the
patients to improve their healthcare experience. As per Grant and Goodman (2018), active
micro skill is the active listening ability in which the healthcare professional helps the patient
by paraphrasing their sentences, encouraging and summarizing their speech so that they could
convey their information properly to the care professional. This mostly includes body
language that helps or support the patient to overcome the critical condition.
While communicating with Joel (20), the RN started communicating to the patient
with compassion and support and was actively listening to his concerns and complications.
Further, it was observed that while actively listening to the patient and his complication the
RN was able to understand that with active listening abilities, the patient got confidence and
assurance that the RN would be able to listen to his concerns and problems. Further, it was
also understood that the RN would help him to overcome his critical condition and he agreed
to the point that anesthesia would be used for his surgical process. This made me feel that
communication is the most important aspect that helps patients to overcome their
complications and accept the intervention for their health and wellbeing improvement. While
evaluating the process it was observed that effective communication in combination with
active listening helps in the healthcare intervention application and increases the health
literacy of the patient. In this scenario, Joel also increased his trust in the care process due to
the application of active micro skills. This could be understood from the patient’s response
when the care professional asked him about his complete experience of surgery, the
healthcare professional helped the patient to focus upon the greater good of his surgical
process and accept the process of recovery.
In the final course of discussion the nursing professional was able to paraphrase or
rephrase the patient’s phrases and therefore, this communication helped him to be convinced

for the anesthesia and he was able to complete his surgeries without any complication.
Therefore communication helped him to develop trust and belief on care system.
The healthcare professional was successful in understanding the patient’s concerns
and then helped him with health literacy that would help them to go through their care
process effectively. While concluding, it would mention that this active listening and
communication associated experience helped the patient to overcome his limitations as the
nursing professional influenced him to develop abilities and effective communication with
the healthcare professional.
