COIT 20246 ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION
Due date: Thursday Week 11 (2PM AEST)
Part: Written Assessment
Weighting: 30% of total assessment.
Submission: Electronic (see unit website for details)
Instructions
It will be necessary to use literature/online resources to complete this
assignment, please ensure you cite and reference any such materials using
the Harvard format.
DO NOT copy content directly from either the text or Internet resources: this
assignment is to be in your own words. You will lose marks if you do not
use your own words!
Please complete your assignment using this submission template file,
inserting your responses where indicated.
DO NOT delete the marking criteria page – changes are permitted to the
formatting of other pages including the headers and footers.
Please fill in the following details:
Student Name
Student Number

Tasks
There are ten (10) tasks, one for each week: the tasks are detailed below. There
is a table to complete for each task. Please fill in the information required. An
example of a completed task is below. Note the first response is good – so aim
for something like this. The second response is not acceptable, so if you submit
anything like it, you won’t pass the assignment! The reasons? Poor resource
selection (Wikipedia), no Harvard reference and a block cut and paste from the
site (no citation, no original content).
Example
Task Find two resources that explain aspects of IT Service
Management.

Title and Reference:
COBIT versus ITIL
Ibaraki, S 2014, online, COBIT versus ITIL, viewed 29/01/2015,
<http://blogs.technet.com/b/cdnitmanagers/archive/2014/04/06/cobit-
versus-itil.aspx>.
Summary:
This resource is a blog entry discussing the differences between
CoBIT and ITIL. I chose this resource as there is a lot of confusion
about the way in which ITSM is applied and the distinction between
the CoBIT and ITIL implementations is frequently unclear. Ibaraki
explains that CoBIT provides the governance and metric structures
while ITIL delivers on the actual mechanics and “how-to” processes.
The author makes an interesting observation that it is wrong to
simplify COBIT as providing the ‘why’ and ITIL providing the ‘how’
because both ITSM mechanisms have considerable overlap and
both need to be used at the same time. I found this article very
useful in explaining the differences and similarities between these
two aspects of ITSM.

Title and Reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IT_service_management
Summary:
This pages talks about ITSM. It says that IT service
management (ITSM) refers to the entirety of activities – directed
by policies, organized and structured in processes and
supporting procedures – that are performed by an organization or
part of an organization to plan, deliver, operate and control IT
services offered to customers. It is thus concerned with the
implementation of quality IT services that meet the needs of
customers, and is performed by the IT service provider through an
appropriate mix of people, process and information technology.

Note: Each resource summary should be around 200-300 words.
Week 1
Task The past decade has witnessed tremendous advances in
Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design and
technology. Find and summarise ONE resource that
describes about the use of VLSI technology and its future.
Summary Title and Reference:
VLSI Design
Asai, S., 2019. Challenges and Opportunities in VLSI for
Systems Dependability. In VLSI Design and Test for Systems
Dependability (pp. 3-25). Springer, Tokyo.
Summary:
VLSI or the Very large-scale integration generally refers to
the process of creating a new integrated circuit which is
done by the combination of hundreds or thousands of
transistors or devices into a single chip. This started in the
year of 1970 during the development of complex
semiconductors and communication technologies.
Microprocessor is considered to be an example of the VLSI
device. Before the VLS was introduced most of ICs
consisted of limited set of functions which they were
capable of functioning. VLSI is considered to be the
successor of the LSI or large-scale integration, MSI or
medium-scale integration and lastly the SSI or small-scale
integration technologies.
Over last few years the electronic industry has seen a
phenomenal growth and the major reason behind this
includes the rapid advancements in the large-scale
integration technologies as well as in the system design
engineering. The introduction of the VLSI in numerous
applications like the integrated circuits (ICs) in high-
performance computing, controls, telecommunications,
image and video processing, and consumer electronics
has been seen to be rising at a very fast pace. Besides this
the current cutting-edge technologies like the high
resolution and the low bit rate video and the cellular
communication has been associated with providing the
end-users with a marvellous amount of applications as well
as in the processing power and the portability. This trend is
also expected to grow at a rapid rate which would be
having very important implications on the design of the
VLSI and the design of the system.
This page is mainly associated with discussing the VLSI or the
very large-Scale integration. VLSI generally refers to the
process of creation of a new integrated circuit by
combining hundreds or thousands of transistors or devices

into a single chip.
Week 2
Task There has been much discussion on blockchain
technology. Find and summarise ONE resource that
describes about the future use of blockchain operating
systems.
Summary Title and Reference:
Blockchain Operating System
Baliga, A., Subhod, I., Kamat, P. and Chatterjee, S., 2018.
Performance Evaluation of the Quorum Blockchain
Platform. arXiv preprint arXiv:1809.03421.
Summary:
Blockchain Operating System is the system that is
associated with the usage of the blockchain as a support in
the background. This blockchain based Operating System
is associated with the capturing of all the commands as
well as the transactions from a device of the user by
means of authenticating, executing and recording them
which occurs on the blockchain. First attempts related to
blockchain based OS first emerged for being used in the
mobiles and smartphones this was a cloud based virtual
system. All the necessary transactions were generally
processed in the cloud hosted blockchain-based data
centers consisting of the only users who are associated
with issuing the necessary commands by means of tapping
or the touchscreen devices. This type of OS generally
consists of a communication layer along with a secured
payments layer. In the future it is expected that all the
benefits along with the advantages of the blockchain would
be available to the OS user. Besides this anything done by
the user on their devices are prone to the risk of being
captured by the respective applications or by the ISPs as
well as by the manufacturing company of the OS who
might also be associated with recording all the activities of
the user in the OS logs.
This concept would be evolving in the future however the
real-world usage of this concept is limited. But despite of
all this if it succeeds in providing a smooth and cluster free
working of the devices, then it might be considered that the
world is not far behind in seeing more and more devices
running on this blockchain OS.
