Executive summary
This research focuses on the proposed study of BIM standardization, protocols used in the
United Kingdom BIM regulations and various Documentations of BIM of the United
Kingdom as well as providing prescription framework on the contents in the BIM, the
purposes and the requirements of the BIM to the construction or building firms The
contextual and conceptual structure serve foundation for the forthcoming study and research
to verify the viability of the protocol and standardization process in the country and
worldwide. Even though Building information modelling tools and technologies worldwide
are the same, a lot of the countries grown and progressed to context-specific BIM to allow
various design processes, procurement processes and policies of the government.
Introduction
Building Information Modelling has been adopted and embraced presently worldwide with
various countries delegating its various civic design projects through legislative means

(Hardin, 2017, p. 281). This has influenced and driven the growth and expansion of BIM
standards as well as the stipulations to modernize project design data earlier to cooperation in
meeting the guiding wants and needs. The construction and building information modelling
method changes holistically. Management and supervisions of various projects are done by
engineers, designers and construction supervisors through the provision of 3D dimension
mode as the main and major constituent of the building design project (Blömer, 2016, p.
76). BIM provides and offers building firms the gears it requires to enhance better
management and supervision of product of the project. The growth and improvement in the
use of BIM approach, building supervision and management activities that are inclusive and
progressing thus displaying a better and clear shortcoming or the disadvantages of the project
(Linet Mahdjoubi, 2016, p. 67). This study involved reviewing Private Student Hostel for
Northumbria University’s city campus against the current standards.

Study Project: Private Student Hostel for Northumbria University’s city campus
This study involved reviewing Private Student Hostel for Northumbria University’s city
campus against the current standards. The Private Hostel is located in Newcastle upon Tyne
(UK). In this study I used existing Estates Department’s floor plans in DWG format, sections
in JPEG format, space information in Excel database and scans of the original elevations.

Having a clash detection system
Different BIM tools and technologies used during the design phase of the project had
capabilities of detecting different spatial clashes between different systems in the project. For
instance, lights hitting sprinklers or ducts running through beams (Lu, et al., 2014, p. 92).
The detection of errors brought about a lot of cost and time saving due to the reduced errors
experienced during construction phase. The tools and technologies used did an excellently
job in recognizing and recording all conflicts in likely to come up during the project
implementation.
BIM contribution to accurate records of geometric data
Accurate records and accounts of geometric data and information have been revealed through
the application of BIM in this project (Wu, et al., 2017, p. 122). Different BIM tools and
technologies have been used to create project databases which ranges from the maintenance
and repairs of the project to how it is managed.
